The Real Secret to MLM / Network Marketing Success
I’ve been involved in various multi-level / network marketing companies, on and off for about 15 years now.
Although I’ve never really had any huge success with MLM’s long term in the past, I have always been able to produce some rather quick and exciting results in pretty much every network marketing company I have been a part of.
Where things have always seemed to have fallen apart for me is not in me not being able to do what was asked of me, but rather in being unable to duplicate myself.
Even when my social circle was very small and long before I ever had a Blog, I was always somehow able to start off quick and attract 5 or 10 or 20 people into the network marketing company I was part of.
However, by some miracle I always seemed to recruit people who – in their own words would say something along the lines of “I’m really serious about being successful here Paul, but I don’t know anyone who would be interested in something like this. What do I do?”
This led me to believe that the primary challenge in all MLM’s is:
- People don’t have a warm market (friends, family, acquaintances) who is interested in their product / business.
- People don’t know how to prospect / generate leads to find people interested in their product / business.
- The company they are a part of doesn’t provide good training in #2.
I’ve seen this in many different MLM’s for over 15 years.
Even today if do your research and look around on the Internet, you will find that everyone is promoting “Lead Generation” as the ultimate solution to MLM success.
Unlimited Leads – True Source of MLM Success?
I myself have spent the last three weeks or so researching all kinds of online lead generation strategies for generating leads for myself and as a way to teach my recruits to do the same.
One such system is called MLSP and so far I really like the method of lead generation it utilizes.
It shows you a way to generate leads by offering free training webinars to people struggling to find leads for their network marketing businesses and it helps you build a relationship with those leads long before you ever ask them to join your MLM opportunity.
It also gives you the opportunity to make money and get paid for every lead you bring into the system even if they never join your MLM opportunity.
But is the lack of leads the real cause of failure in MLM’s?
No, I don’t believe it is.
The Real Reason People Fail in MLM / Network Marketing Companies
After 15 years of believing the “I don’t have enough leads” excuse, I have come to realize the following…
- Success in network marketing has nothing to do with having a “warm market”, as there are plenty of people who have succeed without one
- Success in network marketing has nothing to do with having a “warm market”, as there are plenty of people who have a warm market and don’t succeed
- Success in network marketing has nothing to do with having a “lead generation system”, as there are plenty of people who have succeeded without one
- Success in network marketing has nothing to do with having a “lead generation system”, as there are plenty of people who have one and don’t succeed
In reality there is only one real main reason why people fail to succeed in MLM / Network Marketing.
That reason is simply having the wrong mindset.
That’s it.
Mindset is the key.
A person with the right mindset and no warm market will succeed.
A person with the wrong mindset and an awesome warm market will fail.
A person with the right mindset and no lead generation system will succeed.
A person with the wrong mindset and a lead generation system will fail.
Examples of the Wrong Mindset
I’ll give some examples of what I mean by having the wrong mindset.
I will use slightly modified examples from real conversations I’ve had with some of the 50+ recruits I have in my Lifewave business and some of the 80+ affiliates I have in my GIN business.
I’m very well aware that some of those recruits will be reading this post, and some of them might be horrified when they see what I write here as they’re going to think I’m quoting exact conversations I had with them specifically.
If that is you, let me assure you that what I’m writing about here is stuff I hear ALL THE TIME. Meaning, everyone with the wrong mindset says the exact same things to me.
So I’m not quoting your conversation with me. I’m quoting the same conversation I’ve heard from a LOT of other people in the recent while and some of it going back 15 years.
Example #1 – The Non Believer
Recruit: “I spoke to a friend about the Lifewave patches today but they are not interested.”
Paul: “Have you tried the patches yourself yet?”
Recruit: “Oh yeah…”
Paul: “And what kind of results did you have?”
Recruit: “Oh I only tried them once so far.”
Paul: “And what kind of results did you have?”
Recruit: “Pretty good, but I have to try them more.”
Paul: “Why haven’t you tried them more?”
Recruit: “I am not sure if they work.”
Paul: “How can you be sure they work?”
Recruit: “Well that’s what I don’t know.”
Paul: “Have you watched the training videos on the site I sent you to which show you how to test the patches?”
Recruit: “No.”
Paul: “Why not?”
Recruit: “I haven’t had time.”
Paul: “When will you have time?”
Recruit: “I’m not sure.”
Paul: “Have you done anything else to try to learn how to use the patches properly?”
Recruit: “No, I’m not sure if they work.”
Paul: “How will you ever know if they work, if you don’t properly try them out?”
Recruit: “I don’t know.”
This is a typical conversation I’ve had with many people. They complain that their family / friends are not interested in hearing about the product they are selling. Yet they themselves aren’t willing to learn about the product they are selling.
The reason I have no problem attracting people to my Lifewave business is because I ** KNOW ** the product works. How do I know? Because I’ve done TESTING. On myself, on my wife, on my friends, on my family. Everyone who comes over to my house, gets the “Hey you wanna see something cool?” routine.
Ask my wife! If you come over to my house, you’re getting Lifewave patched baby! I think these patches are the most amazing thing EVER, and I want to share them with people!
Example #2 – I Don’t Have the Money
Recruit: “I don’t know anyone interested in these patches.”
Paul: “Have you ordered your patches yet?”
Recruit: “No, I don’t have the money. My roof is leaking, I have no money for dog food, my credit cards are maxed, my kids are starving and the bank is about to foreclose on my house.”
Paul: “When will you have the money to order patches?”
Recruit: “I don’t know.”
- 1 week later -
Recruit’s Facebook Update: “Woo hooo! Check out my new plasma screen TV. The Superbowl is going to look awesome on this!”
I realize that many people are struggling financially and that is exactly why they’re looking for a home based opportunity to make some extra money. However, what most people don’t realize is that in order to make money and to run a business, you MUST invest into your business.
Network Marketing / MLM companies have some of the lowest start-up costs of any type of business you could get into. But it’s still an investment.
It may be $100 or $500 or $1,000. Whatever the start-up costs are, they are NOTHING compared to starting a traditional brick-and-mortar business.
Recruit: “Yeah, but Paul I *really* don’t have the money. You don’t understand.”
Paul: “I understand. So when will you have the money?”
Recruit: “I don’t know.”
Paul: “Which package are you going to be ordering when you do have money?”
Recruit: “I don’t know.”
Paul: “How much will you need to get the package?”
Recruit: “I don’t know.”
Paul: “Are you studying the free company training I sent you in the meantime?”
Recruit: “No, I haven’t had time.”
Paul: “Why not? Too busy watching the Super Bowl?” (OK, I didn’t actually say that. I thought it though.
)
Seriously, money is NEVER the real problem.
Example #3 – I don’t know anyone.
Recruit: “My problem is that I don’t know anyone.”
Paul: “Do you have any siblings or family?”
Recruit: “Yeah, I have two brothers and two sisters, but they’re not interested.”
Paul: “Oh you spoke to them?”
Recruit: “No, but I know they’re not interested.”
Paul: “What are they not interested in?”
Recruit: “Joining an MLM.”
Paul: “Why would you want them to join an MLM?”
Recruit: “What do you mean?”
Paul: “Who said anything about asking them to join an MLM?”
Recruit: “Well isn’t that what I do?”
Paul: “Have you watched the training I sent you?”
Recruit: “No.”
Paul: “Have you tried the product?”
Recruit: “No, I haven’t had time.”
Paul: “So how do you know for sure the product really works?”
Recruit: “Well that’s the thing, I don’t know if it works.”
Paul: “So then why don’t you test it out and find out if it works?” (This typically leads back to Example #1)
Paul: “Do you have any aunts and uncles?”
Recruit: “Yes.”
Paul: “Do you have a realtor, an accountant, a best friend, a mechanic, a Yoga instructor, a chiropractor?”
Recruit: “Oh yeah, all of those.”
Paul: “Then you know people. Do you know anyone who is currently in pain?”
Recruit: “Oh yeah, my Mom.”
Paul: “What kind of pain is she in?”
Recruit: “All kinds. She has lower back pain, hip pain, arthritis and trouble sleeping.”
Paul: “Have you spoken to her about trying out the IceWave patches to see if they will help her with the pain?”
Recruit: “No, not yet.”
Paul: “When will you talk to her about it?”
Recruit: “I don’t think she would be interested.”
Paul: “She wouldn’t be interested in relieving her pain?”
Recruit: “No, no…I mean she wouldn’t be interested in joining an MLM – she’s old.”
Paul: “Who said anything about joining an MLM. I’m just talking about helping her out with her pain using our product.”
Recruit: “Oh, yeah I haven’t had time to talk to her yet.”
Paul: “Does she have the pain right now?”
Recruit: “Oh yeah, every day…she can hardly sleep.”
Paul: “What were you doing before we got on the phone?”
Recruit: “I was just cleaning the fridge.”
Paul: “Your Mom is in pain. You have a product that could potentially help her alleviate it. And you’re busy cleaning the fridge?”
(Ok, once again I didn’t say that, but I should have.)
I mean seriously. Am I from a different planet or something? If your MOTHER is in pain, and you have a product that could potentially help her with that, is cleaning out the fridge really more important?
Seriously? What am I missing?
The Right Mindset
I could go on and on with countless examples. If you’ve ever been in any MLM I’m sure you’ve had recruits who have given you excuses like these, right?
In fact you may have had some of these excuses yourself. I know I have!
So what’s the solution?
The solution is to develop the right mindset for MLM success.
The right mindset is responsible for 99% of your success in any MLM. I don’t care what kind of product or service you’re selling, if you don’t have the right mindset – it’s game over.
So how do we develop the right mindset?
Want to hear the truth?
The truth is that most likely you will NOT develop the right mindset by listening to your Sponsor / Upline.
And yes that even includes me.
If I’m your Sponsor / Upline, I can’t teach you the right mindset yet. And chances are that your current Sponsor / Upline can’t either.
Why not?
It’s very simple. It’s because I haven’t yet BUILT a successful MLM business myself.
Even though I’ve been around MLM’s for 15 years, I only really started building my Lifewave and GIN businesses about a month ago. I’m still very much a beginner.
I have had some success with recruiting people and starting to grow my organization, and I have already started to make some money with both my Lifewave and GIN businesses.
They are both turning a profit for me. Meaning I’m making more money in the businesses than I am spending on products.
However, I’m not the one with the mindset you should be modeling.
Who you really should be modeling are the people who already have the proven mindset required for MLM / Network Marketing Success.
I’m not just talking about someone you find on the Internet who is making $10,000/m or even $100,000/m in their MLM.
I’m talking about people who have a long term, proven track record of succeeding in Network Marketing.
That doesn’t mean that you can’t learn things from your Sponsor or Upline. Of course you can.
I can teach my people lots of things, but when it comes to having the right mindset to make BIG money in an MLM I can’t teach that yet.
I haven’t earned the right to do so yet.
The GIN Mindset Training
One of the HUGE and most important differences between how the Global Information Network is structured as compared to many other MLMs is in the way they do their training.
In a traditional MLM, a Sponsor teaches and trains his downline.
That downline then turns around and trains his downline.
That downline then turns around and trains his downline.
And so on.
Bob sponsors Bill and trains him.
Bill sponsors Cathy and trains her.
Cathy sponsors Terry and trains him.
Terry sponsors Joe and trains him.
What’s wrong with this?
Well, what’s wrong with this is that it is the BLIND teaching the BLIND.
Even if Bob has the right mindset for success because he already created success in his organization, Bill might not have that mindset.
Bob tried to teach it to him, but until Bill implements the training he doesn’t have the mindset.
He just has theory.
Bill then teaches this theory to Cathy – making some small changes along the way… leaving out some key components.
Cathy then teaches this theory to Terry and also leaves out some key components while at the same time adding in some of her own theories and ideas.
Terry then teaches this theory to Joe, once again making some minor “adjustments”.
Well guess what… Joe is now being taught the WRONG mindset. He is not getting the same training that Bob offered Bill.
It’s been changed. It’s been watered down. It’s been altered.
This is what most MLM’s do. They have the blind teaching the blind behind the guise of “being duplicatable”.
It sounds good in theory, but it doesn’t work!
The only person you can REALLY learn the right mindset from is from someone who is already achieving the things that you want to be achieving.
If you want to build a 6-figure MLM business, you need to be trained in the right mindset by someone who is already running a 6-figure MLM business.
Anyone else will just lead you down the wrong path – me included.
That is what I REALLY love about the Global Information Network (GIN).
When you become an affiliate in the GIN network you get access to mindset training from the VERY TOP. You get access to Kevin Trudeau and some of the top leaders in GIN who have also built massive downlines in multiple MLM’s over the last 15-30 years.
You don’t have to rely on me or any other “Sponsor” or upline.
Even if I train you on 95% of the right mindset, it might not be enough.
The only way you will know for sure that you are being taught EVERYTHING you need properly is by learning from people who are achieving the results you are seeking.
A common saying in most MLM’s is “Plug into the system.”
The challenge is that a lot of times “The system” is wrong, because “The system” teaches you to get your training and especially mindset training from your upline / sponsor.
The reason for this is because for most companies that is the only way that training can be disseminated to everyone in the organization without everyone crowding around the top level people.
The challenge is that like I said before – this doesn’t work because the training is watered down and changed along the way.
What I like with GIN’s setup is that when you become an affiliate you plug into training DIRECTLY from the top.
My responsibility as your Sponsor / Upline is NOT to train you. I’m not qualified to train you – yet. And you’re not qualified to train your people – yet.
My responsibility is simply to work on MY business and to encourage you to plug into the training directly from the TOP. That’s it.
Don’t listen to me. Listen to the training coming from the top. From the people in the company who have already built long term residual income streams in GIN and other MLMs.
But My Company Has Training
I know a lot of people say that their MLM has training put out by the people at the top. They have a website with a bunch of videos teaching you all about the products and such.
For example, Lifewave has this type of training as well.
This type of training is NOT what I am referring to.
Product training from head office, or recordings from some company events and a few audios from some of the top guys in the companies is NOT ENOUGH.
Most company training programs like this barely scratch the surface of what’s needed.
What is really needed is a constant stream of ongoing MINDSET training from the top guys in the company that are producing results.
The training must not only focus on the product or service of the company, but on the MINDSET itself.
Mindset is 99% of the problem / solution to MLM / Network Marketing success.
GIN offers hundreds and hundreds of hours of training on Mindset.
There is also new additional training that is being added weekly.
No other company has this caliber of training.
My Recommendation
I strongly recommend that ANYONE interested in having success in their MLM become a member of the Global Information Network and utilize the GIN mindset training to help them succeed.
You don’t have to participate in the GIN affiliate side of the business if you don’t want to.
The GIN affiliate program is not for everyone. I totally understand that.
However, the GIN Mindset training is second to none. It will help you with whatever MLM / Network marketing business you’re a part of.
Learn your mindset from GIN and apply it to your MLM.
This is exactly what I’m doing with my Lifewave business.
Lifewave has an awesome product. They also have awesome product training.
But they don’t have anywhere near the quality or quantity of mindset training that GIN does.
No other MLM company out there does.
December Special in GIN

great post Paul. even though I see myself in some of the excuses you listed, I know you are right. Mindset is 99.9% of success in any endeavor. I play guitar and I have been doing so for about 19 years. the last 9 or so years however has Been nothing more than noodling but I had a time when I know I set my mind to succeeding in a band, the band was called 7th generation and upon setting my mind on the idea of success, I and my band mates were literally swept up in a whirlwind of success, we had three record contacts offered to us and through our promotions, music and message we inspired the right people to create the “native American Music association and Native American music awards or “the Nammy’s” as They have affectionately come to be called. I know full well the power of Mindset and How quickly it can create momentum. Keep pushing forward brother. I am on your team and together we will change the world!
The only reason I’m so intimately aware of these excuses is because they used to be my excuses. Some of them as recently as just one week ago!
It’s through the training in GIN that I’m getting past all these stupid excuses and doing things despite these “obstacles” that stop others.
Haha, very revealing. I especially enjoyed your conversation examples. “I don’t know” is really almost always an excuse for “I don’t want to put any effort in this”.
