I keep listening to the news speak about getting free online grant applications so I have been looking around for the best site to get one. There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also.

What if you did a site map and told the engines how to search your site. then you also have the capability to tell it not to go to certain places.

@David: Yes, in the post I talk about doing both. Chances are if you had your categories and tags in the sitemap to begin with, Google will probably continue to index them even if you take them out of your sitemap, which is why I think you need both.

I wouldn't tell google to index a page in your sitemap and then have a meta tag saying not to on the page itself. It might not really do much, as Google is probably smart enough to ignore the page even if it's in the sitemap, but might as well remove it just in case.

Out of interest, do you think there's any benefit to removing your categories and tags from the sitemap as opposed to merely placing the relevant meta tag (noindex, follow) in the head section of the site? Ultimately the result remains the same whilst providing Google with more information to filter through.
