Live Blood Analysis Results

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Thursday, April 15th, 2010

This Monday I went to visit Dr. Shelly Wade at the Westgate Wellness Centre here in Maple Ridge for my live blood analysis.

Although I’ve been fascinated with live blood analysis ever since I heard about it back in 2002 through the Tony Robbin’s “Living Health” seminar, I couldn’t find anyone locally here in the Vancouver area that did live blood analysis back then.  Last year my wife went in to see her chiropractor, Dr. Nima, at the Westgate Wellness Centre and saw that live blood analysis services are offered there so I put that on my list of things to get done.

I was really excited about this appointment as I wanted to get a visual picture of what my blood looks like in its “before” state.  Meaning, I know that the standard North American diet I’ve been following for pretty much my entire adult life is crap, and I’m ready to make some major changes to it, but before I make those changes I wanted to see with my own eyes what this diet has been doing to me at the cellular/blood level.

It’s one thing to know that drinking pop is not good for you, but it’s a totally different thing to see the sorry state of your own blood cells as a result of eating and drinking all the things we know we shouldn’t.  It’s one thing to hear that we’re supposed to be drinking 6-8 glasses of water to stay properly hydrated, but it’s another thing to see your own blood dehydrated, with cells sticking and clumping together.  I’m getting a bit ahead of myself though.  Let me walk you through what happened at the appointment.

The Live Blood Analysis Appointment

I arrived at the appointment and Dr. Shelly did a short consultation with me before diving into the live blood analysis.  She took a small droplet of blood from one of my fingers for the live blood analysis and several other small droplets for the dry blood slides.

For those of you who hate needles or are scared of blood, I assure you this is nothing like the standard blood tests you’re accustomed to.   This is not a test where she had to draw a vial of blood or anything, but rather just a tiny droplet from my finger similar to the process diabetics use to test their blood glucose levels on a daily basis.  You don’t even feel the prick of the tiny needle.

The blood samples are then placed directly under the microscope right in front of you, so it’s not one of those tests where you have to wait weeks to get results.  The microscope has a digital camera hooked up to a computer screen that brings up a live feed of your blood just as if you were looking into the microscope directly.

Dr. Shelly then adjusted the settings on the microscope, brought the sample into focus and we started looking at my blood cells as they swam around.  Definitely one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time.  Maybe I’m weird, but I think it’s fascinating to see your own live blood cells floating around under the microscope.

What I Saw

Viewing your own blood under the microscope while it’s still alive is definitely very cool.  You get to see all kinds of things that a regular blood test which spits out numbers and figures on a piece of paper can’t show you.

One of the first things Dr. Shelly showed me is how a lot of my blood cells had dark spots in the middle.  In the picture below you can see how a lot of the cells look like they have holes in the middle, similar to a doughnut.

Live Blood AnalysisThese are called “target cells” (or codocytes), and they are red blood cells that are most likely deficient in iron.

I also saw that my blood cells were clumping together and sticking to each other instead of moving around freely.  In some parts of the sample (see bottom right of the picture) I saw that the blood was totally clumping almost looking like sludge.

These pictures are definitely not doing the live blood analysis justice but in this appointment I wasn’t able to get video for you guys to see on the Blog.  Hopefully I’ll be able to capture some video for you guys next time.

Parts of my blood were also starting to exhibit signs of Rouleau.  When you see Rouleau under the microscope it looks like the red blood cells have stacked themselves together, one on top of another, like a stack of coins.  This can indicate excess dietary protein combined with poor protein assimilation, eating too much animal protein, dehydration, and too many toxins in the blood.

It’s very hard to describe what the blood looked like in words, but to me it just looked very unhealthy, clumpy, congested and tired.  Definitely not the type of blood I want to have in my body, and since all the organs, muscles, bones and even the brain all rely on the blood to bring them oxygen and nutrients, I now see that eating my current diet is equivalent to “body abuse”.  It happens from the inside so you can’t see it, but every time I drink a pop or eat a crappy meal it’s like physically abusing myself.

The Horror

The only reason I didn’t get freaked out by what I saw next is because I already knew to expect it.  Dr. Shelly panned around the slide and showed me several instances of organisms (parasites) living in my blood, that most people who follow the standard North American diet will have in theirs as well.

Although I know this kind of thing would probably freak out most people, especially in the sterility obsessed society we live in today, I thought it was really cool to see what kind of little bugs have been living in my blood and tissues eating up my nutrients, causing havoc and further polluting my blood with their waste matter/excrement/feces.

Dr. Shelly was kind enough to take a snapshot of these.  Take a look at these little monsters:

Protit Veil - Live Blood Analysis Protoplast - Live Blood Analysis

Parasite - Live Blood Analysis

Most of these parasites thrive in an environment where the body is toxic, nutritionally deficient, pH imbalanced and physically run down.  Dr. Shelly said that luckily we didn’t see any of these parasites still alive or in large numbers so my body is doing its job in destroying these before they become an issue, but seeing this still motivates me to make changes to my diet so that I am not providing these parasites the toxic and unhealthy environment that they thrive on.

Not to freak you out or anything, but unless you’re really taking care of your body through proper diet and nutrition already, it’s almost certain that you have these and many more parasites like them in your body/blood too.  We all have parasites in our tissues and blood, and there’s very little we can do to prevent them from getting into our bodies, but what we can do is to support our bodies with proper nutrition and hydration so that our immune system keeps these in check and we can also deny them the toxic and nutritionally deficient environment they need to thrive.

Dried Blood Analysis

This next picture below represents a different type of blood sample analysis called “Dried Blood Analysis”.  Unlike the live blood analysis, this blood sample was allowed to dry and it is used to identify slightly different things compared to live blood analysis.

dried blood analysisBased on some of the charts I’ve seen on dried blood analysis, the white lines, spots and the outer perimeter show antioxidant and mineral deficiency as well as some oxidative and adrenal stress.

Dr. Shelly told me that these are not issues that have just showed up.  Based on what she saw it was clear this is something that’s been around for a while.  That makes total sense since I haven’t really been taking care of my body for a long time.

What Does It All Mean?

Now, besides looking at your own blood in its live state, what kind of value can we get from having live blood analysis done?

Well, first of all not all live blood analysis is the same.  Dr. Shelly does a specific type of live blood analysis called Bloodscan™, which is a patented program that combines live blood analysis with a proprietary reporting software that generates a personalized report/analysis which tracks the current state of well-being in your body and compares it to optimal levels and previous analysis to track progress.

If necessary, the report also makes recommendations for specific types of supplements which can be used to bring the body back into balance but the system does not endorse or specifically recommend any one brand of supplements over another.  In other words, the report may tell you that you would benefit from taking a multi-vitamin supplement as an example, but then you’re free to go purchase that supplement from your favorite supplier.

The Bloodscan™ Report

Bloodscan Report

The Bloodscan™ report I received from Dr. Shelly a few days after my test was a 13 page report (partly shown above) which I found very informative.  The report provided me with information on:

  • Nutritional Imbalances
  • Degenerative Processes
  • Cellular Fatigue
  • Anti-Oxidant Imbalances
  • Mineral Imbalances
  • Iron Imbalance
  • pH Imbalance
  • Metabolic Disturbance
  • Immune System Imbalance
  • Inflammatory Processes
  • Oxidative Stress
  • Adrenal Stress
  • Liver Stress
  • Kidney Stress
  • Anemia
  • Lymphatic Congestion
  • Dietary Insufficiency
  • High Fat Diets
  • Bowel Toxicity
  • Bowel Inflammation
  • Chemical Toxicity
  • Metal Toxicity
  • EFA Imbalances

As you can see this is an incredible wealth of information and it will be instrumental in helping me to make the necessary adjustments I need to make to get my body back to optimal health.

Here’s a video that explains a bit more about what Bloodscan™ is.

Who Can Benefit From Live Blood Analysis?

The way I see it, there are really two main types of people who will benefit from this type of analysis.  First of all, anyone who is suffering from any ailments and who hasn’t been getting anywhere with the treatment prescribed by their doctors, or if they simply want a second opinion.  Regular doctors don’t do live blood analysis and they know very little (if anything) about proper nutrition, so getting something like this done could potentially shine a new light/perspective on any “conditions” you may be suffering from right now.

The second type of people who can really benefit from this are people like me, who don’t have any major symptoms or conditions yet.  It can be hard to take care of your body, and put in the effort and energy to maintain a healthy diet and exercise plan when you aren’t sick, and you don’t have disease or pain. This is why most people don’t make any changes until their poor eating habits and lack of exercise do manifest in some kind of condition or disease.

For this type of person I think live blood analysis and especially the Bloodscan™ report can be very useful because it can show you exactly where you’re at in terms of health and give you an opportunity to make changes and improvements before they become a “condition” you have to deal with.

Final Words

For me, live blood analysis added a totally new dimension to my understanding of nutrition and biology.  I was finally able to see some of the things I’ve only read about in my nutrition studies in the past, and I thought the whole thing was fascinating.  I’ve even considered looking into purchasing the type of specialized microscope needed to do live blood analysis so that I can study this stuff in more depth, but that’s just the scanner part of me thirsting for more knowledge and wisdom.

For now, I’m going to utilize what I’ve learned from this to help me make the changes I need to make in my diet so I can get my body back in optimal health and to lose some of this excess weight I’ve been carrying around.

  1. Wesley says:

Not really a believer of live blood analysis, done a bit of searching and there doesn’t seem to be much proof to it. (Since it’s a scientific process, it can be disproven)

    http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/Tests/livecell.html
    http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=377

What is your process for trusting some of these new techniques? Do you look at it from both sides? Just curious.

Though if these results do help you make the changes you need to your diet, all the better.

    • Paul Piotrowski says:

@Wesley: My process for trusting some of these “alternative” techniques is to do my research first, from both sides, and then to check them out for myself and see the process with my own eyes. I prefer that method than just dismissing something based on an opinion of one guy on a website that targets almost every kind of alternative technique out there.

Do some research on Quackwatch and the guy behind it. You may be shocked what you find out.

  2. Jim says:

Live blood analysis is a test with absolutely no scientific value.

    Read this article on QuackWatch:

    http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/Tests/livecell.html

    • Paul Piotrowski says:

@Jim: I researched the Quackwatch website years ago. He attacks *everyone* and *everything* that isn’t based on allopathic medicine. Meaning, Quackwatch pretty much says that everything outside of regular medicine is crap. If you go look up any kind of “alternative medicine” or even basic nutrition on there they say everything is crap. This includes naturopaths, chiropractors, vitamins, juicing, acupuncture, and everything else you can think of. The guy behind Quackwatch, Stephen Barrett even attacks two time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling! Linus Pauling was only one of two people to ever win the Nobel prize in two fields, and was named one of the 20 greatest scientist of all time by the magazine New Science. The only other person in the 20th century on that list was Albert Einstein. (See more about Linus Pauling here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linus_Pauling )

The guy behind Quackwatch, Stephen Barrett, on the other hand has been exposed in court cases to not even be a M.D. like he claims on his website because he failed his psychiatrist certification exam. See more about one of the court cases against him here: http://www.canlyme.com/quackwatch.html . In the case he had to concede his ties to the American Medical Association, the FTC and the FDA. Wow, what a surprise there.

My view on Quackwatch is this. It is a website, just like any other, and the author of the website has the right to express his opinion just like I have a right to express my opinion on my website. But just because it’s on Quackwatch, doesn’t mean it’s true. From what I’ve seen, there is no conclusive scientific evidence that proves anything on Quackwatch is true. But, you’re welcome to believe whatever you wish to believe.

I prefer to do my research and try things in person, and not just listen to the opinion of some guy who is against anything alternative. For example, when I wanted to see if Chiropractic works, I went to see a Chiropractor. When I wanted to see what Naturopathy is all about, I went to see a Naturopath. When I wanted to test the effects of taking vitamins, I started taking a multi-vitamin. When I wanted to see if Reiki works, I got Reiki done on me.

See the pattern? I don’t just listen to some guy with an opinion, I check things out for myself. If I listened to “some guy” I would have never met my wife online in 1996 because everyone back then was telling me that meeting someone online is ridiculous. Today millions of people use online dating sites to meet people. I would have never become an entrepreneur because I had plenty of people telling me that getting a job is safer. I would have never even started Blogging in 2006 because the idea of making money from a Blog didn’t make sense to most people.

At the end of the day, I present my personal experience on this site. You can choose to do whatever you want with it. I was very impressed with Live Blood Analysis and I think it’s going to help me make the dietary and nutritional changes I need to make.

  3. Dr. Nima says:

Even Oprah Winfrey has hate sites. Stephen Barrett is a notorious hater of all things that don’t involve drugs or surgery. He’s been trying to “expose” chiropractic for being bogus for years. He lost a huge lawsuit against Dr. Tedd Koren (Chiropractor) less than 10 years ago that was a huge win for us. In a nutshell, Live Blood Analysis is a tool to help guide you to change your lifestyle for the better– And evaluates your progress in the meantime. No, it’s not covered by the government, and it costs money– which is why it’s criticized. There have been a tremendous amount of people who have receive incredible value from it. There is no harm or danger in the process, unlike almost any medical intervention out there.

    LOL….Quackwatch, that site’s a joke.

Here’s another joke for you, I went to my doctor and asked what I could to do to become more healthy and lose some weight and he told me two things:

    1. Drink Diet Pop
    2. Go on Jenny Craig

How does ingesting aspartame and eating microwaved food lead you to a healthy lifestyle? I have been going to regular doctors all my life and they haven’t done anything for me. They just prescribe you a pill and send you on your way. I can honestly say that since turning to a more “alternative” approach (especially Chiropractic care), I have felt the best in my life.

I’ll take my chances with alternative medicine.

  5. Wesley says:

Well, can you show me any scientific reports where the conclusion is that LBA works? I haven’t found any. It should be easy if the claims were true, no? (Since again, it is a scientific process and the results can be verified)

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2005/jul/12/health.science

In the above article there was a test where 12 out of 110 had cancer. A doctor had to use LBA to find the ones with cancer, he was only able to identify 3 of the 12.

You did check things out, but you went in already believing that you have several dietary deficiencies, and they just confirmed what you already believe. I guess a better test would be to send a healthy person (pretending to be unhealthy) and see what their results are.

Not knocking you, just a difference of opinion, and that’s OK :)

    • Paul Piotrowski says:

@Wesley: LBA is not intended to diagnose cancer, and I was well aware of that prior to having the test done. You are right, in my LBA the dietary deficiencies that were confirmed with LBA I already knew I had. Meaning, I already knew that I wasn’t drinking enough water and that I’m dehydrated. I already knew that I wasn’t getting the minerals and vitamins I should be and that my pH levels were unbalanced.

I’ve been eating a horrible diet leading up to the test so I already expected all of those things. For me, in this particular case, the biggest reason I wanted to get LBA done was to see my blood under a microscope with my own eyes so that I can see how unhealthy my blood cells look to use it as leverage to motivate me to make changes. It worked! :)

Now, as far as “scientific proof” is concerned, the challenge with seeking “proof” for something in a scientific journal before you accept it as truth is that you’re making the assumption that if it isn’t “scientifically proven” than it doesn’t work or isn’t true.

I’ll give you an example. Have you ever been outside and seen a bee fly? Are you aware that in the 400+ years since science has been around, scientists haven’t been able to figure out how the heck a bee can fly until 2006. Yes, they were able to split the atom and create a hydrogen bomb, but the aerodynamics of flying bees hasn’t been “scientifically proven” until just a few years ago. ( See science daily article here: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/01/060111082100.htm ) I’m not even sure if they’ve proven how bumblebees fly yet. :)

Now, when it comes to nutrition and preventative medicine, science and medicine hasn’t even admitted or shown “proof” that nutrition has any effect on your health. When I did my nutrition courses, I was shocked with what I learned and the politics involved. There is a LOT of money in the “treating the symptoms of disease” game and a lot of companies have a vested interest in creating doubt around alternative medicine.

You may find this video from Dr. Mercola interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPI7zdGdqo4

Wesley, you’re a programmer much the same way I am. I’ve written code dating back to the days of assembler and BASIC so I totally understand how to think logically. I used to dismiss anything that wasn’t “scientific” because I thought it was all “crap”, but then I kept running into situations where direct life experience was showing me one thing and what was accepted by the media and the general public / the scientific community was another.

If you’d like to learn more about LBA and the studies done on it, look into the work of people like Dr. Robert Young. He’s studied live blood for over 30 years and has written many books on the topic of pH balance and Alkaline Diet. He has helped many people improve their health, lose weight and overcome some crazy diseases. There are numerous studies mentioned throughout his books, but once again you won’t find any “scientific proof” because it’s very difficult to prove anything to do with overall health since there are so many factors involved with human beings.

How you live your life is totally up to you, but I wouldn’t put all your faith in the supposedly unbiased “scientific community” which couldn’t even “prove” that bees can fly until just a few years ago, and that can’t even prove that smoking kills people or whether or not global warming is happening.

Seeing my own blood under a microscope and seeing how the cells look and move, and the parasites that are in my blood is proof enough for me to make dietary changes. I’m not going to wait for “scientific proof” of something that’s staring me right in the face to accept it as real. I think Steve Pavlina really nailed the concept of ‘proof seeking’ in this article: http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2007/10/proof/

      -Paul

  6. Drea says:

I think Wesley is right in saying that if it helps Paul in leading a healthier lifestyle, then great.

But what I don’t understand is what scientific proof you are looking for?

If you are taking your blood and putting it under a microscope and then looking at it and comparing it with samples from people that are healthy to see what deficiencies you have, how is that not scientific?

One could argue that maybe LBA isn’t the best test to use when looking for cancer, that there is a more accurate test used for that. The same for any other disease out there. If you are using a test that isn’t meant to check for that certain disease, of course you will have poor results.
From my understanding of LBA, it is to give you a guideline of your overall health, not to check for cancer or other diseases.

Scary but interesting. It’s great to see the reactions of your body directly instead of waiting for the disease before you do something. I wonder whether it’s possible to do such a live blood check in Germany, too.

    • Paul Piotrowski says:

@Alice: Should be. I know some of the doctors and scientists that talk about LBA are from Germany. I’m sure you can find someone local.

  8. People, who want to lose weight, get more energy or improve concentration and general wellbeing will also benefit. People also wishing to determine the effectiveness of their current treatment regime whether it be holistic or conventional medicine will benefit immensely.

  9. Hey Paul, sorry for taking such a long time to comment. I read the whole post a long time ago! I admire your ability to take the initiative! I would probably want to study more about the microscopes if I were you. But that scanner part of us always wants to hop around, and know everything! It’s annoying sometimes, isn’t it? But you know what, I don’t know what I would do without it.

Hope you are able to live a new, healthy lifestyle, and you’re doing well on the Weight Loss Challenge!

    Hey Paul,

What does your standard american diet consist of? I’d like to compare what I’m eating to what you’re eating to get a general idea of how healthy my blood might be.

Breakfast: I drink a raw juice and raw nuts with some granola cereal.
Lunch: I eat a “Healthy Choice” which really isn’t that healthy and is heavily processed.
Dinner: I eat some kind of frozen food – usually meat + cooked frozen vegetables + carbs (i.e. teriyaki chicken stir fry with broccoli).

I eat fast food (i.e. Subway) about 6 times per week.

    -Jesse

P.S. I’m DIEING to know how you blood will look after you’ve cleaned up your diet!!!!!!!!
Jesse´s last blog ..Why “Blogging” Is a Terrible Way To Make Money My ComLuv Profile

    • Paul Piotrowski says:

@Jesse: The Standard American Diet, also called the SAD Diet, or the Western Patter Diet, according to Wikipedia is “characterized by high intakes of red meat, sugary desserts, high-fat foods, and refined grains. It also typically contains high-fat dairy products, high-sugar drinks, and eggs.”

Basically, if you turn on a television and watch all the commercials throughout the day and write down all the foods being advertised in commercials, that would make up the diet. :)

We’re told that “milk does a body good”, not because it does, but because the dairy farmers are a for-profit business like any other. They test marketing campaigns and see what people respond to and use that. You don’t see commercials for broccoli or cauliflower or apples, right?

A HUGE part of diet is what you drink as well. You didn’t mention it, but it makes up a big part. I know many people who drink “fruit juice” thinking it’s healthy for them, and made fun of me when I was drinking Coke all the time, but they don’t realize that a lot of “fruit juice” sold in stores has more sugar than a Coke, more calories, and the juice is pasteurized so there are no nutrients left in it save for maybe Vitamin C.
