The Paulymath Show – Episode #01

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Thursday, April 1st, 2010

I’m super excited to announce that the premiere episode of The Paulymath Show is now live on YouTube.

In this episode I cover the idea and meaning behind the word “Paulymath”, discuss the “scanner / polymath” personality type, review the book “Refuse to Choose” by Barbara Sher and the Kodak Zi8 HD Pocket Camera.  I also did an update on the Blogger Weight Loss Challenge I’m doing with Tyler Cruz and announce an opportunity for you guys to enter into a draw to win some cash.

The Paulymath Show – Episode #01

Feedback and an Opportunity to Win Cash

As I mention in the show, if you subscribe to my YouTube Channel by clicking the yellow Subscribe button just above the video on YouTube, and leave a comment with some words of encouragement for me or some words of discouragement for Tyler Cruz I’m going to enter you into a draw to win some cash if I win the Blogger Weight Loss Challenge.

I’d also love to hear your feedback about the show here on my Blog.  Let me know what you guys think of my first episode, what you’d like to see more of, any kind of suggestions you may have of how I can make the show better for you, any kind of books or products you’d like to see reviewed, any kind of topics you’d like me to dive into etc.

Also, I’m going to try to apply for YouTube’s partner program which would allow me to upload video’s that are longer than 10 minutes in length so I don’t have to split my episodes into multiple videos like I did with this one.  The more views, subscribers and ratings I get on my videos the higher the chances I’ll get approved so if you’d like to help out, sharing the videos with your friends, embedding them on your Blog or just rating them and leaving comments would really help me out.

Making the Videos

I’m relatively new to working with high definition video, and I totally underestimated the amount of time it takes to work with the format.  It took me over an hour to render the intro for the show, and over two hours for each of the 6 minute videos to encode in 1280×720 HD format.  Then, once the encoding is done it takes another 30-45minutes/each to upload to YouTube and another 30mins/each for YouTube to encode the videos.

That’s just the amount of time to basically export and upload the videos once they were 100% finished and ready for publishing.  Working with video is definitely more time intensive than whipping up a quick Blog post, but I have to say that even though it was a lot of work making this first episode, I really enjoyed making the videos.

Future episodes should be a lot faster for me to make now that I’ve got all the pieces in place for shooting the videos, the intro scene done and a lot of the settings for encoding figured out.  I’m sure I’ll eventually get faster at this and maybe in the future I might get a second machine with an even faster processor for encoding the videos.

Special Thanks

Lastly, I just wanted to send special thanks to my friends at Amped Media for sponsoring the Kodak Zi8 HD Pocket Cam that I used to film the videos.  I wanted to upgrade my Flip Mino to an HD cam so that I could film the episodes in high definition and so that I could capture audio through an external microphone.  I spoke to Amped Media about the show and they were nice enough to sponsor the purchase of the camera.

For those of you who don’t know, Amped Media is the main affiliate network that I used last year to generate my affiliate income.  I have accounts with over a dozen networks, but the majority of my income last year has only come from two networks and Amped Media was the largest of them.  They have also sponsored a couple of affiliate marketing contests on this Blog in the past as well, and I’ve always enjoyed working with them since signing up with them last year.  So, if you’re an affiliate marketer and you haven’t signed up with them yet I highly recommend them.

Hi Paul, Congratulations on your first show.

As you know I’m very text in my approach (I think it can pack in more content and the content is more readily scanable). I think what video can do that other media can’t is give a sense of personal connection. So you might want to incorporate more personal examples – eg the behaviours that Barbara’s book made sense of for you. (I love this book by the way – and some of her other ones too).

One mild distraction was the screen with the changing lines in the background.

    Wishing you every success.

Thanks to your blog I found on an iPhone app Your blog which has finally helped me discover a new title for my multi-faceted interests (scanner)! I enjoy reading new entries and now watching them! I am now 18 years old and relieved to find I don’t have to force a specialist lifestyle down my throat to conform to what educators and most of society push, lecture and narrow mindedly tell you is right!

Don’t wait too long to implement your plan and make sure you show him what a PaulyMath can!

    Long Live the Scanners!

Great video Paul ! It renders really well.

    I have two questions :
    - what microphone did you use ? Is it a wireless one?
    - what software did you use to edit the video and make the intro (wonderful by the way)?

    • Paul PiotrowskiNo Gravatar says:

@Alban: The microphone I used is one I picked up from The Source (formerly Radio Shack), and it is their own branded version of the Audio Technica ATR-3350 Lavalier Microphone. It’s corded, but it only costs around $20-$30. Look on Amazon, you’ll find it.

The video was edited in Adobe Premiere and the intro was done in Adobe After Effects. You can get fully functional 30 day demos for free from Adobe’s website.

However, Premiere/After Effects are not simple products to use if you’re just starting out video editing. There are products on the Mac and even for the PC that are simpler/easier. Premiere is basically what you can use to make “real” movies. It’s more complicated but I had some experience using it before and since I’m a scanner I have no problem taking on the challenge of learning a new software product.

My previous vids were edited using the free software that came with my MacBook.

  6. Great show Paul, I commented on basically all of your websites, lol. One final question: Are you going to be doing the show on regular intervals? Maybe one episode per week?

    Thanks again,

@Josh: Yes, I plan on doing regular episodes. I’m not sure what kind of schedule I’ll have yet, but that is the plan.

I’d love to do several episodes a week if I can organize my schedule to do it.

I just watched this for the second time, just because I find the concept so compelling and cool and fun, so watching it is really inspiring. I purchased and HD capable camera a few months ago and wasn’t sure how I would make use of the video features, but now ideas are a brewing, Paul!

I have been away from my blog fro a while (I have kept it from dying completely by posting photos and so on, but it’s limping along to be honest, but since I started reading your blog I am once again inspired. Maybe it’s because you’re local to me, I find your accomplishments easy to aspire to.

If I could make one suggestion for your video, is that I think you could improve the lighting, there is a fair bit of glare…

    Great work.
    Constructive criticism below.
For me, I found the first video a bit too repetitive, you kind of said the same thing a few times but with different words.

I’m in Australia and the load time took quite a while, so I understand you like nice crisp HD settings, but to me a would prefer a bit of loss in quality over a load time. What settings are you saving it out at? H264 @ 1000-3000bit compression?

I have yet to look at the second video as it, took too long to load the first video…so a bit of a turn-off for me.

Loved the title sequence, I thought you hired a professional…not to say you’re not a professional ;)

    • Paul PiotrowskiNo Gravatar says:

@Girlstartup: Thanks for the feedback. Regarding repetition – All of the training I have in personal development points to the fact that human beings learn through repetition. One of the best ways to influence the subconscious mind is through repetition, which is why advertisers employ repetition more than any other technique to influence human behavior. As a result, whenever I talk, coach or mentor people I have developed the habit of using repetition where appropriate as I have found it to be very effective as a teaching tool. In some instances I have coached people where I have repeated a concept dozens of times in a session, and one week later they had already forgotten it so I had to repeat myself once again. Sometimes it can take dozens of exposures to an idea or concept before our brains begin to remember something. That’s why advertisers play the same commercial over and over and over again on TV, instead of varying their commercials all the time.

Years and years back I had a belief which was “New information is valuable, I don’t need to hear about things I already know.” That one belief was a major hurdle in my personal development. It was through a Tony Robbins program that I learned that “Repetition is the mother of all learning” and it was a huge benefit to my personal development.

Yes the videos are compressed in H.264 MP4 format and uploaded to YouTube in Hi-Definition. My intention for creating these videos is to engage an audience of viewers who prefer the video format for learning so the content is going to be mostly tailored for them. I totally understand that there are many readers of my Blog who prefer to read, instead of watching video for any number of reasons, and I will continue to produce written content as well, but when it comes to my videos I want to create content that is best suited for those who prefer video and want the HD quality.

By creating both written and video content, I think it will help the most people. Also, whenever I create content I always think 5-20 years forward at least, so I wanted to make sure I produced videos in HD as non-HD is pretty much dead. Having said that, YouTube does have a selector to allow you to choose 720p, 480p or 360p formats, so maybe just select 360p for watching the videos?

  14. girlstartupNo Gravatar says:

    Hi Paul,
I have no problem with watching video, I prefer it, but the load time takes too long. I have no problems watching a lot of video on vimeo or youtube, whilst the settings are still nice and crisp, so you might need to play with you bit rate a bit more.

I also understand about repetition, but I don’t think it has to always be in sentence exactly after the one you just said. You could in fact repeat your thoughts, later down the track like you suggested. To me the repition in this video, came acoss as you losing your train of thought, so needed to reiterate what you had just said because you were not sure if you had already spoken it. The repetition approach doesn’t work for me personally, but you have to do what you feel is right for you. Again I only trying to be constructive here, I’m not one to sugar-coat things , I like to be honest and open :)

    • Paul PiotrowskiNo Gravatar says:

@Girlstartup: I totally agree with you in that in some of the spots I repeat myself multiple times, and I also say “uhm” a lot. Not that this is an excuse, but we’re used to watching TV shows where everything is rehearsed and memorized and dozens and dozens of takes are done until every word is perfectly spoken, so it doesn’t seem natural to watch video where things aren’t “perfect”. However, I’m taking the advice of Gary Vaynerchuk who has been doing his Wine Library TV show for over 3 years and he only does ONE take. There could be total screw-ups, misspoken lines, weird interruptions, strange camera problems etc. I’ve even seen him do one video while sitting on the toilet. He is a HUGE proponent on just getting the content out there and not worrying about making it perfect. It’s the content and the message that’s important, not how you present it. He promotes a much more “raw” version of doing video.

In this video I still did 3 takes and each time I fixed certain things, but I finally just decided to post the 3rd take even though it wasn’t “perfect” as if I didn’t I would still be working on the first episode now. In fact, there are thousands of people right now who are trying to create videos and make them perfect because we have such a high level of expectation seeing TV shows, and most of those people will never actually put the content out there because of fear of not being perfect.

The reality is that TV shows are working with multi-million dollar budgets and WAY more time. I saw the other day that it took over 7,200 hours to film one episode of the show 24. That means they spend over 75hours filming just 15minutes of the show and that’s with huge budgets, professional actors etc.

Once again, I’m not trying to make excuses, but rather to communicate what I learned about video and how to actually get something OUT there. We have to get out of our perfection mind frame.

Having said that, my goal is to improve with every video I make and to just keep pumping out more content. This way by the time I do a hundred videos they might suck a little less. :)

Hi Paul, I give you great respect to even attempt a video like this as it takes great courage and the action behind it to make it happen. This being your first episode it might not be as polished as the 400th video you’ll make but you have to start somewhere. Those people who criticize others work are usually the ones that are too chicken shit to create there own blog or content and just go out there and complain about others, so please get off your high horse and just try making your own video and see how hard it is to make.

But with that being said, once again I want to say great job for creating this video and I can’t wait for future episodes of the Paulymath Show.

    • Paul PiotrowskiNo Gravatar says:

@Bart: Lol. Thanks for the support. I don’t consider the feedback I’ve gotten from everyone in comments here and on YouTube as complaining, but rather as constructive criticism I can use to improve my future shows. This is even more so for this video since I specifically ask for feedback in the video itself.

Having said that, I hope others who are thinking about video don’t take the feedback I’ve been getting as demotivating for them to do video. I’ve been getting a LOT of positive support and feedback from people about the video in private emails, phone calls, YouTube messages and other places which may not be visible to others, so I just wanted to mention that as a source of inspiration for others.

I’ll be writing about this in future posts, but for now I’ll just say that for anyone who has been thinking about possibly doing video – DO IT, you won’t regret it. It’s such an awesome medium. I’m just kicking myself for not starting sooner.

@Bart – It was constructive criticism, that’s how one learns and grows and Paul asked for honest feedback.

Ps- I have my own blog and I am certainly taking action. Granted I might be too chicken %$$%4 to do video at this stage, but if I do decided to video down the track, I will certainly encourage and welcome people to tell me honest truth. No point waiting 400 videos to find out what people really think.

You seem to be a great speaker, good job on that! One thing I’d like to see is chapters, since I’m not interested in everything in the video. Don’t know if that’s possible in youtube though.. Just looked it up, here is a sample video:

But audio seems to stop playing when you skip ahead via the chapters. Seems to be a youtube bug. Hope they fix it soon..

Anyway, you could also do the same thing here on your site, via normal links you place under your youtube video (youtube deep links in combination with javascript to reload the embed). Could help you out if you want..

I use a Kodak Zi8 which allows me to shoot in 720p High Definition. It actually also does 1080p, but I think for Internet stuff 720p is more than enough.

As for microphone, I use a Yeti microphone plugged into my computer and then set to pickup the sound in the room so that I don’t have to wear a lapel microphone. I have a lapel mic, but I hate being attached to it.
