Maybe there is some subtlety in that the scanner needs to commit to making at least one area of interest monetization (if that is a goal).

I don't know if I agree with that. Remember that up until just recently, most people were either born rich or born poor. There was very little class jumping going on lets say 500 years ago, or even 200 years ago. The opportunities we have today are different than they were back then.

Can you qualify who you're referring to when you say "many of the scanners"? I forgot the statistic, but there is something like one new millionaire being created every minute in the US alone, and I bet a lot of them are scanners.

Also, even if it was harder to make money as a scanner, I honestly don't really think it matters. For a scanner it's easier to make money as a scanner than trying not to be a scanner. However, you're probably right, a specialist who focuses ONLY on money/building wealth will probably make more money than a scanner who only pursues wealth as ONE of many different things they do. What I mean by that is that the scanner will probably only have a net worth of $50million, or $100 million versus a specialist who might have a billion. But you know what? After the first 50 million does it really matter? :)

Let the controversy begin: if you really study many of the "scanners" or renaissance souls" unfortunately you find that they do not typically have significant financial success. Other success... ABSOLUTELY! Financial... only rare exceptions and even then it was not the "scanner" attributes (read about Benjamin Franklin as one example).

If you're a scanner but measuring yourself financially, it may be better to surround yourself with non-scanners that can implement consistently.

OK... I am sure there are other opinions on this (to politely discuss it).

Jim that's awesome! We should chat some day... maybe we can help each other out. I'd love to learn what you learned about being a movie director, producer, editor etc. Being a scanner is awesome...I don't know how people stick to one thing all their lives - it sounds so boring. :)

Wow, this is quite an amazing post and discussion. I've been the definition of a scanner to a tee and I've always felt quite alone in the world. My friends all have their "careers", that one path that was meant for them, while I've been all over the map. In my 37 years on this planet I've been a radio DJ, movie director, writer, web designer, seo consultant, music supervisor, editor, actor, stand-up comic, producer, clothing designer, etc. and all of my friends and my wife say the same thing, "Pick something already!" Well, I get bored very easily, and I always figure life is short so you might as well enjoy as much of it as possible.

I also have what I like to call "Hobby Bobby Syndrome" meaning that I have a new hobby pretty much every week. This week's was fixing my dryer. How's that a hobby you ask? Well, I didn't just replace a part, I tore the whole thing apart down to the last piece and spent the week researching how it works, how the parts work together, and how to fix it. In one week I learned something new and couldn't have been happier, even it was just fixing a clothes dryer, ha!

Anyway, I just wanted to share a little bit about my history just in case it helps someone else feel like they're not alone. Man, this post was a great find, thank you so much, you've made my day!
