How I Fixed My Knee

As some of you may have read in my previous Blog posts, I have been having some problems with my right knee.  I reported a problem with it on Day 9 of P90X as well as yesterday.  I didn’t know what it was, but it just “tweaks” on me all of a sudden and I have all this pain whenever I try to go up or down the stairs or when I try to bend it.  When I put weight on it and bend my knee, it sends a shooting pain up my leg.

A couple of weeks ago I met a young and energetic Chiropractor named Dr. Nima Rahmany, locally here in Maple Ridge, BC.  My wife has been going to him for a few months and she’s been getting some great results, so she was bugging me to go see him for weeks now.  Normally I’m pretty healthy and don’t have many back related issues, so I haven’t really even though about going to see a Chiropractor.  Not that I was against going to see a Chiropractor, but I just never thought about going to see one so I didn’t.

Since she started going I’ve learned that there is a LOT more to Chiropractic care than just taking care of your back.  Today I was having lunch with Dr. Nima as I’ve been really fascinated about the work he’s doing at the Westgate Wellness Centre here in Maple Ridge, and after lunch I popped into his office for a few minutes and he did a mini-adjustment on me.

It took about 5 minutes, and he used some form of instrument that gently applied pressure to a spot on my neck and around my lower back.  It didn’t hurt at all.  It actually just felt like someone pressing the pencil eraser part of a pencil against my neck and lower back for a few seconds.  He also showed me a way to self-massage the lower quad muscle just above my knee and a couple of stretch exercises to help me stretch the knee out.

Of course this was just a mini-adjustment as he wanted to show me what he does so I understand it a bit better.  I’m sure the experience and treatment is different for everyone.

I visited with him for a while longer as he showed me a bit more of what he does, and then I left his office.  As I was leaving, I didn’t want to wait for the elevator so I took the giant staircase down to street level.

Well, I got down to the bottom of the stairs and as I stepped outside I realized that my knee wasn’t hurting anymore!  I just ran down those stairs and I had no pain in my knee anymore.  I called and thanked him for the mini-adjustment, as it obviously helped with something.  I don’t know how the nervous system works that well and what one side of my neck and lower back have to do with my right knee, but it definitely made a difference.

I’m not saying it’s a miracle cure and that my knee won’t act up on me again, but it seems that the treatment has definitely moved me more into balance and took the pain away.  I’m going to use the self-massage technique he showed me and the stretches to hopefully strengthen my knee and keep it healthy.

If you live in the Lower Mainland here in BC, I highly recommend visiting the Westgate Wellness Centre here in Maple Ridge.  Dr. Nima and his staff have an amazing positive energy about them that you’ll feel the minute you step inside.  Their approach to health and wellness focuses on prevention and keeping your body in balance.

If you go see Dr. Nima, let him know you read about him on my Blog.  Here’s a link to the Westgate Wellness Centre and all the services they provide: Westgate Wellness Centre.

Yeah, chiropractors can work some serious magic if you’re having pain issues. I went to one a few years back after I injured my lower back from a fall. I’ve had few problems since – just the occasional stiffness. I’ve given some thought to going back to a chiropractor on a regular basis to see if I can get an adjustment to help my knee as well as my shoulders and upper back. Right now I’m holding off as I have a large dental bill coming up (damn cavities) and I’d like to see how much of my health savings is left after that…

@Melissa: From what I’ve been learning from Dr. Nima, they can do some amazing things even if your not having pain. Meaning, getting on a preventative program not just waiting until your back is screwed up. :)

What’s happening with your knee? Is it like mine?? Where it just tweaks and then it hurts going up and down the stairs?

LOL This article just reminded me of Allen from Two and a half Men :)
