Is the Law of Attraction Dead?
A few years ago you couldn’t turn on the TV without hearing all about “The Secret” and the Law of Attraction (LoA). Law of Attraction “guru’s” were popping up all over the place. Oprah was hosting interviews, Larry King Live was hosting interviews, everyone wouldn’t stop talking about it.
Internet forums and chat rooms started filling up with people talking about, discussing and arguing for and against the Law of Attraction. Some die-hard believers defended the Law of Attraction, while other non-believers bashed it and called it a scam.
I have a Google Alert setup that emails me whenever Google indexes anything new it finds related to the Law of Attraction, and it used to go off like crazy sending me numerous emails every day. Now I still get the alerts but they are nowhere near the levels they were a year or two ago.
The truth is that the Law of Attraction has now moved past the “fad” phase. You don’t see people standing around the water coolers talking about “The Secret” anymore. Most people have stopped discussing it altogether. It’s not a big thing anymore. It’s not something that grabs the attention of the media anymore.
So Is The Law of Attraction Dead?
Absolutely not. I’ve been a serious student of the Law of Attraction since around 2001. I have used the philosophies associated with the Law of Attraction in pretty much every area of my life, and when the movie “The Secret” came out, it wasn’t a very big secret to me at all. I was excited when it came out because it helped to bring the concept to the masses. Finally when I talked to people about it, they didn’t think I was nuts. I mean once Oprah admitted that she believed in “The Secret” and that it’s been largely responsible for all the success in her life, people began to listen.
It was really cool to finally be able to talk to people about the concept without them thinking I’ve lost my mind. However, shortly after the initial excitement wore off a little bit, most people began attacking the ideas behind the Law of Attraction because they quickly realized that if the Law of Attraction is really true then that means EVERYTHING in their lives is something they attracted.
That concept requires people to take full responsibility for their lives. That kind of thinking does not go over very well with people who live their lives in a victim mentality. So the LoA bashers began their onslaught, attacking the whole concept altogether.
After a while, those who believed got bored arguing with those that didn’t. Believers realized that there is no point trying to convince the non-believers that Law of Attraction works because they were utilizing the very same Law of Attraction that they don’t believe in to attract “proof” that LoA doesn’t work. See, the Law of Attraction doesn’t care what you use it for. If you want to attract “proof” that LoA doesn’t work, then you’ll attract it. Believers can see the irony in that. Non-believers just see the proof and don’t realize what they have just done.
What’s the State of the Law of Attraction Now?
Most people who I talk to nowadays are somewhat indifferent about the Law of Attraction. They don’t necessarily not believe it, but they also don’t actively try to use it to help them attract what they want in life.
Those who were into it before the whole “Secret” fad came about, are still using it today, but those that got caught up in the hype have lost interest.
I think it’s great that this has happened. I think the hype behind the Law of Attraction was getting quite ridiculous and way too many people were talking about it from a place of theoretical blabbering, instead of from experiential understanding.
Blabbing on and on about the Law of Attraction, without actually having experimented with it in real life yourself is pointless. It’s like talking about martial arts moves after watching a bunch of Steven Segal movies. If you want to learn martial arts, then go take lessons and experience the process. You’ll learn more about martial arts by attending one week of classes than from watching every single UFC fight on TV.
Where to now?
As I mentioned above, I’ve been a student of LoA for about 8 years now and by student I mean that I’ve not only read and studied about the subject, I’ve also experimented with it extensively for 8 years.
I’ve used the Law of Attraction in my life long before “The Secret” came out, and I’ll continue to use it long after most people have forgotten about it. That doesn’t mean I’m some kind of super guru, but it just means that I haven’t forgotten about it or given up on it. I love the Law of Attraction. It’s helped me in my life so much. I still use it every day.
Every once in a while I’ll have a conversation with someone and I’ll remind them about the Law of Attraction and tell them to make sure they utilize it in their daily life. Some of the people I talk to actually have had a lot of success with the Law of Attraction, but then they kind of just forget to use it. I like to remind them.
An Example
For those who don’t believe in the Law of Attraction, this will mean nothing. For those who believe, but may have forgotten, this example may help to reconnect you to the whole concept of the Law of Attraction.
Here’s just ONE example from my personal life that illustrates how the Law of Attraction is working in my life – all the time. This is the first few sentences of an email I received today from a friend of mine I probably haven’t spoken to for a good 6-8 months:
“Hey Paul, Felt the need to connect with you for a bit. You’ve popped into my thoughts quite a few times over the last month…”
Over the last month I’ve been exploring some ideas for projects I’d like to work on, and on the weekend I was thinking about this very person as being a prime candidate for someone I might want to work on one of these projects with.
I didn’t call them. I didn’t email them. I didn’t take any physical action to warrant a response from them. I did visualize the possibility of working with them on a project in the very near future. Then I received that email from them.
If this was just one incident that happened, I could easily say that it was just chance. However, these kinds of things happen to me all the time, every day. I’ll attract people, events and things at the exact perfect time I need them.
Are you still using the Law of Attraction? Or have you given up on it because the “Secret” fad has faded?

Pawel,
While I have never studied or even really looked into the LoA, I know exactly what you’re saying. There have been to many “coincidences” in my life that I can’t help but think there is something else going on. Quick question, would you recommend ‘The Secret’ or are there better reading/studying materials on the LoA. I know, for a fact, there is something there, I just want to learn how to harness that power and get a better understanding of it.
I’ve been reading your site for a while, you do a great job bringing in the spiritual to everyday life. Keep up the good work.
@derek: I would highly, highly, highly, highly recommend “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace Wattles.
It is *THE* book on Law of Attraction that belongs on the bookshelf of any LoA practitioner. When I talk to people who are supposedly into LoA, I always ask them if they’ve read the book and if they haven’t then it basically tells me that they pretty much know nothing about the Law of Attraction. It is THE book that actually inspired the movie “The Secret”.
Once you study that book – and yes I mean STUDY, as in read many times – you can move onto other content. I particularly like the work from Esther Hicks and all her books. Look her up on Amazon and you’ll see she has tonnes of books on LoA.
Start there.
Like you, I was into the LoA before The Secret came out, and was excited that it had reached mainstream. I’ve also found that ‘non-believers’ just don’t understand that it works even for them, and it really is an absolute waste of time trying to ‘convert’ people.
There are either those that get it, those that want to get it, and those that don’t get it. Anything we offer about the LoA should only be to the former two types of people, and the latter two can continue on their merry, ignorant path.
However, it took me a few years to realise that, and the realisation only happened within the past couple of weeks. Now I just devote my time and energy to those that want to learn and use the LoA, rather than those that don’t.
Yes to LoA, I haven’t seen The secret but I definitely will. There have always been many little “coincidences” and synchronicities in my life and it took me quite a while to realize that LoA is responsible and in fact there are no coincidences and accidents.
After I realized this I began to play with LoA more consciously, it also helped that I met my gf who believed and used LoA in practice too. I do not push others into LoA I try to show them through example and people who are on the verge of becoming believers begin to think there might be something to this…and they explore and hopefully experiment…
I know LoA works whether you want it to work or not. I have the book and I’ve read a bit in it,
but I’m still attracting mostly unconsciously, but I know I’m responsible for becoming more
aware of what I’m doing.
Yes, yes, yes! It is so good to see someone still speak of the Law of Attraction. I remember first getting into it many years ago, and like you, I was excited when it seemed to go “mainstream”. Alas public interest seems to be less these days, but thankfully many still use it. It is my belief that everyone pretty much uses it on a daily basis whether they know it or not. To answer the question you closed the article with, “YES!” I still use the Law of Attraction. Thanks for this article Paul.
Paul,
Thank you for the info. I read “The Science of Getting Rich” today and am happy to say that many of the things he mentions, I already incorporate into daily life. It may be hard to overcome the “competitive” traits but not impossible. I think, as you mentioned, it will be imperative that I read it again and again. It seems like it may be a tough task staying in the mindset that he mentions. Also not involving oneself in the thoughts of poverty or the impoverished may be tough. I may have some questions when I go through this again. Hopefully you have a second to answer them. Thanks again.
Great post…
So nice to see someone still posting about the Law of Attraction. I recently wrote about using the Law of Attraction to help you get out of debt on my blog.
I live the secret and everyone I share it with has seen an improvement in their lives (when they apply the principles)!
Dan Moore has a project entitled ‘Beyond The Secret’ coming out soon: http://www.scienceofsuccesscoaching.com/DVD/beyond_the_secret_dvd.html (not an affiliate link
) … may be one to watch out for!
Regards,
Karl
It is the New Year’s syndrome. People start off with good intentions, but just like dieting – people tend to return to the rut. I became aquainted with LOA many years ago and did just that – practice it and fall away. Eventually I made some changes and now LOA is just a part of me and my beliefs and with me everyday.
The good thing about the LOA craze is all of the great blogs – like yours – that have been created and that provide so much awesome information for my never ending education
I was listening to another teacher’s take on the Law of Attraction and he called LOA a general law that more vague for quantum physics. His term was now Law or Resonance and I think I’m more comfortable with that paradigm. We do manifest our intentions when our actions thoughts and vibrations resonate with like objects. The resonance is far more important than the desire to attract. Years ago, when I taught a singles group, I use to promote that you had to become the person you wanted to attract. Little did I know that I was practicing LOA or LOR in the early 1990′s..
I do not exactly follow it,But have experienced it many times.
I was one of those who came to know of it during the hype period and then lost interest in it.
I loved your piece and whole heartedly agree with all that you have written.
It’s interesting to hear you talk about how people belive in it, or don’t believe in it. As if it is a religion.
A fundamentalist christian would think the same way: Believers or non-believers.
The next level of thinking, beyond the law of attraction is a present state of awareness whereby regardless of you seeing someone as a believer or not– you love them anyway, and don’t see any separation between them and yourself.
I know for a fact that when I try to share the principles, whether or not someone believes it or not, I’m truly owning the principle when I can share and not judge whether they are believers or not. Even if they reject me….
Where is God not?
Good article, and I like that discussion as well. As far as LoA, I am exploring the definition as well as application. This LoA is relatively new to me, at least the particular label. I think that those who are interested would find worthwhile insight from looking into Vipassana meditation. There are discourses and exercises on identifying sensations, intent as well as other mental and emotional context. The Four Noble Truths and Eight Fold Path are a good place to start if someone is inclined to investigate for them selves. A true understanding of Karma might help it relation.
Sure, accesstoinsight.org is a good site and endless-satsang.com has interesting content also. Some books to look into are; Change your Mind by Paramananda, the Venerable Lobsang Gyasto has a book on the Four Noble Truths that was one of the first books I read on the subject. Very good and a quick read. Mindfulness in Plain English by Venerable Henepola Gunaratana, A Gradual Awakening by Stephen Levine, Brad Warner wrote two books that might appeal to some. Any one into 80′s hardcore might of heard of his band, Zero Defects. Bass player turned Zen Monk. I liked the two books. Radiant Mind by Peter Fenner, awesome read, kinda heavy for new comers. Sharon Salzberg and Joeseph Goldstein have a good guided course on Insight Meditation for people just kinda getting into it and Jon Kabbit- Zinn knows a thing or two. The list goes on but definitely all good stuff. I am by no means an authority. I have been practicing Vipassana for some time now. I know a few people who are up on personal development and talking to them, I saw some similarities so I started exploring the both sides. I like your site, I hope I didn’t overload with too much info.
@Matt: Where would one learn about this? Can you point to any resources? Books, etc.
