Getting Organized With a Sony PRS-505
Last week I got a Sony Reader PRS-505. Basically it’s a digital book reader that utilizes a special screen display technology (E-Ink) that simulates regular paper books to prevent the eye strain normally associated with regular flat screens.
I’m not sure exactly how the screen technology works, but it’s very impressive. I can hold the device at any angle and see the text exactly the same way with no distortion, change in brightness etc. It’s basically like holding a real book. The screen is not back lit, and basically just looks like paper.
The device can hold around 160 eBooks with it’s built in memory, and has expandable memory slots for virtually unlimited space just depending on the size of your media.
What’s really cool about the device is that it will help me to better organize my library of books. Right now I probably have somewhere upwards of 1,000 books in my library and it’s kind of a pain in the butt organizing all of them. I have six bookshelves full of book in this room alone, and I still have book lying around all over the place with no room to put them anywhere.
When I moved into my new place, having to move all these books was a major pain in the butt as well, so I’m making the switch to digital media starting now so that I can expand my library in digital format instead of buying more and more paper books and trying to find room for them on my overcrowded bookshelves.
I honestly haven’t had too much time to play with this toy yet as I’ve been so focused on getting my fitness and health plan into place, but I did load up a couple of eBooks onto it and they were really easy to read on there so I’m very impressed with it.
Of course another popular device similar to this is the Amazon Kindle, but the problem with that device is that it isn’t supported here in Canada so I wouldn’t be able to use it even if I did find a way to buy one and import it in from the US. This Sony one is available for sale and use in Canada and works great.
Now if I could only figure out some way to magically take my library of books and convert them all from paper format into digital format and onto this device.

Nice device, I could do with something like that to read up on all of the ebooks in my “to read” list
Would be a cool idea to take it on holiday etc whilst travelling.
@Richard: Yup, you don’t have to try to decide which books to bring with you on a trip. Just bring your whole library.
I never though about it like that (minimizing the mass of so many books). I might have to get one now. Too bad my birthday is today, so it is too late to ask for one.
How do you get the books you already own into the device?
Fair enough, it is a nice device but I think a smarthphone will do me just fine.
