P90X – Day 5 – Legs and Back
Today was a tough day. Last night after midnight I started getting some stomach cramps. There is some kind of stomach flu that’s been going around since January and I had it for a while about 2-3 weeks ago. I hope it’s not coming back.
I also did not feel very good after eating that Top Sirloin Steak salad yesterday. I think the red meat is just too heavy on my stomach right now. Maybe I’m not fully recovered from the flu yet. Either way, I had some cramps but managed to fall asleep and by morning things settled down.
Breakfast – Blueberry, Banana Protein Shake
I wanted to give my digestive system a bit of a break this morning so instead of having solid foods I made a blueberry, banana protein shake using the Beach Body Whey Protein powder. It tasted pretty good, but I didn’t get to snap a picture of what it looked like as the camera battery was dead.
I plugged in the camera battery to charge, but unfortunately I didn’t get any pictures of anything today.
The Workout – Legs and Back
The workout today was rough. Not so much because of the muscle burn on the exercises, but because I was feeling a bit queasy. During our warm-up routine, we do some jumping jacks and when I was doing those and jumping up and down I could feel the stomach cramps I had last night coming back.
I started wondering if I’m going to be able to do the workout, but I decided to just keep going and see what happens. My legs were still very much sore from yesterday’s workout… actually, they’re still sore from MONDAY’S workout!
Anyway, I managed to get through it and about half way through I began feeling a lot better because I could see a light at the end of the tunnel. By far this was the toughest mental workout day for me so far. A part of me wanted to stop and rest, and use my upset stomach as an excuse but another part of me knew I had to keep going. I couldn’t let myself down.
I persisted and finished the Legs and Back workout still feeling queasy. On Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s after the main workout we also do another 15 minutes of what’s called the Ab Ripper X which is a super high intensity Ab and Core workout that just destroys you. I can’t remember the exact number, but I think it’s something like 349 consecutive ab and core reps that help to strengthen your core and sculpt your six pack.
The only thing tougher than doing Ab Ripper X is doing it on an upset stomach. I thought about skipping it until later on in the evening, but then I told myself “Let me just get the first set of reps done. I can stop anytime.” Then I told myself “Just one more set.” and so on, until the whole thing was done and I was very happy that I persisted.
It was a hard workout, my legs burn, my abs burn, I wanted to quit, but I didn’t and I’m super happy that I managed to get through it.
Lunch – Recovery Drink
After my workout, I had my recovery drink and just sipped it slowly to see how my stomach would react. It’s weird because it actually kind of soothed my stomach. I thought about eating something right after, but decided against it because I had an early birthday dinner to go to at a restaurant tonight so I decided to just wait and eat at the restaurant.
Dinner at Tony Roma’s
I had dinner at a Tony Roma’s restaurant and I ended up ordering a garden salad to start, and grilled fish with rice and brown beans in a tomato sauce. Tony Roma’s is known for their ribs, but there was no way I was going to eat a big slab of ribs after working so hard today to burn 600 calories during my workout and especially on my queasy stomach.
On my official P90X menu plan, I was supposed to have fish for dinner with rice and a vegetable so I pretty much mirrored the meal at the restaurant.
When they came around asking if I wanted dessert I told them “No Thank You.” I’ve been on diets before where I ate a piece of cake on someone’s birthday because I didn’t want to be rude, and I figured that “It’s just one piece of cake.” but now that I’ve been doing P90X, there’s no way I’m wolfing down a piece of chocolate cake or a big bowl of ice cream. No thanks, I’ll pass. The last few times I did that, I ended up falling off of my plan completely.
To be honest, actually, I really didn’t even crave dessert anyways. My stomach was full from dinner and now that I try to eat small portions every 2-3 hours, I feel like I’m always eating so I don’t feel deprived at all.
The only challenge I’ve had today was trying to get enough calories in for the day. I ate a protein bar in the late evening and a couple of cups of popcorn, but my calories for the day are still well below what I should have eaten. I only got 1639 calories for the day, but considering my stomach was not feeling too happy all day I think I did ok. Tomorrow is another day.
Sorry about no pictures today, but the camera battery was dead and I didn’t really have a lot to eat except shakes and that dinner at Tony Roma’s.
