P90X – Day 3 – Shoulders and Arms

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Today’s workout focused on the shoulders and arms, alternating between shoulders, biceps and triceps.  Even though I woke up completely sore from the first two days of workouts, today’s workout felt so much better than the first two days.

I think my body is no longer in shock and it’s getting used to the pace of these workouts, so today I was much more clearheaded and more focused.  The exercises were challenging and I felt the burn in my muscles but I definitely felt stronger than the first two days.

After finishing the hour long shoulder and arms workout, we also did another 15 minutes of the Ab Ripper X workout which just KILLS your abs.  I was really happy with that today too because I was able to do way more reps on a lot of these exercises than I did on Monday and that was only 2 days ago!  I don’t know how, but my body was able to recover pretty quickly and I definitely felt much stronger in the abs and core today.

Overall the workout felt great and I can’t wait to do tomorrow’s workout which is Yoga X. It should be very interesting. :)

Now as far as my diet plan goes, here’s what happened with that.

Breakfast – Turkey Scramble

For breakfast this morning I made a turkey scramble made out of 8oz of egg whites, 2 oz of low fat turkey breast, and about a half tablespoon of low-fat parmesan cheese.

I’m really liking the egg white scrambles.  This morning it tasted so good I was about 3/4 ways done when I realized I didn’t take a picture to put up on the Blog.  Oh well, I’ll take one the next time I make it. :)

No Lunch Again

Every morning I’m eating breakfast earlier and earlier, but even still I ran out of time to make lunch today.  The challenge is that I can’t eat lunch for at least 3 hours after breakfast, so if I eat breakfast at 10am, I can’t eat lunch until 1pm which is normally fine, but then I can’t work out on a full stomach so I have to wait until 3pm to start my workout.

That still would have been fine, but I got delayed today because I had to change the main water filter in my house and that took some time.  I live in a rural area and we’re lucky enough to live on well water that’s really clean and tastes great and has no chlorine in it like the city water does.  I have a sediment filter and a UV filter setup to filter all the water in the house and both of those have to be changed once in a while and today was that day.

My wife was nice enough to pickup the filter for me from the suppliers.  She got home after noon and it took me a few hours to get organized and get the filter changed.  When that was done I didn’t want to eat lunch anymore because I wanted to start my workout, so I just did my workout instead.

By the time I was done with that, it was around 4pm so I just had a protein bar and my recovery shake and held off until dinner which was at around 6pm.  I know I have to eat more frequently and in smaller portions, but today I just decided to kind of combine my lunch and dinner foods into one and had a big dinner.

Dinner – Egg / Cheese / Bacon Salad and Grilled Chicken Breast on Rice

Bacon, Egg and Cheese Salad

Grilled Chicken Breast on Rice

Doesn’t that grilled chicken breast look awesome?  My wife arranged it all pretty like that on the plate for the picture.  She definitely knows how to make food look even more appetizing.  We just use an electric grill to make these chickens.  I can’t believe how easy it is.

P90X Supplements

IMG_1468

I was surprised today when the UPS guy knocked on the door with my box of supplements from P90X.  I only ordered them on Monday, and they got here lightning fast even though I’m in Canada and they were shipping them from the US.  I’m very impressed with their quick turnaround and service on ordering these.

P90X – After Workout Drink – Taste Test

After my workout I tried out the P90X After Workout Drink which comes in Smooth Orange flavor.  I made the shake, took a sip and I liked it.  It tastes very similar to the Endurox R4 post workout drink I’ve been drinking for the last two days, except that the P90X drink has a bit more of a smoother taste.  The Endurox one tastes more like Tang, and the P90X one has more of a smoothie type taste.  Both are good, but I definitely like the taste of the P90X drink.

It gets two thumbs up from me!

P90X – Peak Performance Protein Bar

I bought two kinds of bars.  One is a Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor, and the other one is Wildberry flavor.  The first one I tried was the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor one, and this bar tastes awesome! I kid you not, it tastes like a candy bar.  I couldn’t believe this was a protein bar.  I could eat a dozen of these! :)

The Wildberry one I’m just trying right now as I type this and it’s really good too, but I think I like the Chocolate Peanut Butter one better.

Both these bars definitely get two thumbs up from me!

P90X – Whey Protein Powder Shake

This is a Chocolate flavored whey protein powder shake.  I made a glass of it without mixing it with anything else except water, as I wanted to find out what it tastes like without being blended into a fruit smoothie or whatever.  It actually tasted kind of like hot chocolate but less sweet.

It doesn’t taste bitter or bad, but it doesn’t taste very sweet either.  I think I would enjoy that one better if I mixed it into a fruit smoothie so that I can get the natural sweetness of the fruits in there, but compared to some of the other protein powders I’ve tried out there that taste absolutely horrible, this one is pretty damn good.

Absolutely no complaints from me on this product either.  These guys definitely score very high marks with me on the taste side of things, which I think is very important because I’ve thrown out way too many tubs of powders over the years because I thought I could get used to the taste and never did.

Thumbs up on this product from me as well.

P90X – Peak Health Formula – Multivitamin

I ordered these multivitamins to compare them to the ones I presently take from a company called Progressive.  Over the years it took me a while to research and find a good quality multivitamin and I finally settled on the Progressive brand ones and stuck with them for years now, as I haven’t found anything that compares to having as much good quality vitamin and mineral content as these multivitamins.

I was comparing the P90X multivitamins to my Progressive ones and they are very similar.  The P90X ones have a few extra things in them, as well as slightly greater amounts of certain vitamins, so I would say that they are probably 10-20% better than the ones I’ve got right now.

I’ll try these for a while and see if I like them better than the Progressive ones and if so I’ll continue to buy these ones for the “slight edge”.

P90X – Strength & Muscle – Men’s Formula

This I haven’t tried yet.  It’s basically a Creatine type supplement which you take after your workout, but I didn’t have a chance to try it today so I’ll probably write a review of it tomorrow.

Here are my nutrition stats for today:

Hmmm, I like your idea of “natural” approach to weight loss. But I don’t know any weight loss plan where bacon on salads is all that healthy. Your salad appears to be made with iceberg lettuce, which has zero nutritional value. Might I suggest spring greens, fresh spinach or even romaine. I also notice your chicken is on white rice. This is refined, processed and stripped of its nutrition. Again, I’d suggest going with a brown rice- tastes much better and the whole grains are so good for you. Best of luck. Hope this has been helpful.

@Kate: I found out it was actually Romaine lettuce I had, not iceburg. :) So it was a bit better than I thought.

@Kate: Hi Kate, thanks for your tips. Let me “explain”. :)

The bacon on the salad was to make up for the Turkey Bacon I was supposed to have in the morning with my breakfast. We didn’t have Turkey bacon in the fridge, so I just decided to use the last few slices of regular bacon we had left. I know bacon has saturated fats which are not good, so it’s something you won’t see on my salads for much longer as soon as the bacon in the fridge is gone.

Three cups of iceburg lettuce has 1.5 grams of protein, 2.1 grams of fiber, 30 mg of calcium etc. so it’s not completely void of nutrients. However, I agree with you as I normally eat spring greens mixed with spinach, and actually have those in the fridge but just wanted to eat the lettuce we had in the fridge from a few days ago.

The rice I ate was Uncle Ben’s converted rice, which I still have some left over as well. It’s not exactly white rice, but it’s definitely not as good as brown rice. This rice has 38g or carbs and 4g of protein per 1/4 cup, whereas Brown rice has 11g carbs and 1.3g of protein. There are also other nutrients in Brown rice like calcium and potassium which get stripped out of rice through processing, but I’m already getting plenty of those from the other things I’m eating and the multivitamins I’m taking. I didn’t mind the extra carbs in this type of rice as I needed them to meet my macro-nutrient percentages for the day.

You’re absolutely right in that what I’m eating is still not 100% the best stuff I could be eating…it’s about 90% of the way there, and there is still room for improvement as I empty my fridge of foods I will no longer buy, and fill it instead with more healthy choices. I’m totally OK with being 90% of the way there because I know what I’m eating is still 1,000x better than what I was eating before (McDonald’s, deep fried foods, etc.) The other reason I post pictures of what I eat is to that other people can learn from my journey. Maybe I’m making a mistake by doing it this way. Maybe I should just dump the bacon in the fridge and replace it with a healthier alternative instead of using up the last few slices. Maybe I should throw away the “Converted” rice and use brown rice instead, but I know that there are many other people who would approach the situation this way as well so I think documenting it on my Blog might help them as well. If I end up not hitting my goals for the week eating this way then others will also see that we have to be more stricter on our diets. However, if I still hit my fat loss goals this week even though I’m only eating 90% of the way I should be, it might give hope to others who aren’t prepared to throw away the food that’s in their fridge and cupboards when going on a new diet.

So it’s kind of a win/win for me to do it this way. :) Thanks for your suggestions, they are much appreciated, but I just wanted to explain what my thinking was while doing this so that you know why I’m making these food choices.

Keep commenting on anything else you see, because I might not be realizing that there are better alternatives to what I’m eating. Thanks.
