Is Your Health Sabotaging Your Success?

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Sunday, February 8th, 2009

A couple of weeks ago I was asked by Angela Bear (my new coach) to write out a detailed description of what would be my perfect day.  Doing this exercise was not easy for me.  I actually struggled with it a lot, but finally I came up with a written out description of my “perfect day” which spanned about 5-6 pages of typed text.  She wanted me to make it painstakingly detailed.

As part of that exercise, I described the definition of what I want my perfect body to look like and the level of fitness and health that I want to have.  Ever since then, a part of my mind has been increasingly obsessed with getting my butt in gear and getting myself healthy.

You see, I am very clear on the level of financial success that I want in my life and I’m also very clear on the level of fitness and health that I want in my life, and those two Goals have always been at odds with each other because I always had the excuse that I simply don’t have the energy to pursue both of these simultaneously.

A prime example is what I did at the beginning of last year.  In Jan 2008, I started an exercise program and I stuck with it for 90 days straight, completing it at the end of March.  During this time I lost about 15-16lbs and my cardiovascular fitness and endurance improved significantly.  However, during the same period of time I was putting so much energy into my health and fitness that I didn’t really have a lot of energy left to devote to my Blog.

So, at the end of 90 days, I switched gears and began focusing on my Blog instead and was able to achieve incredible results in a very short period of time.  Prior to April 2008, the most I ever made from Blogging was $7.83 in one month, but on April 17th, 2008 I decided to really focus on trying to Make Money Blogging, and by the end of April I made $279.55 ( April Income Report ).  By July 2008, I grew that income to $2,758 ( July Income Report ).

Of course, learning how to make money from Blogging also lead me to the world of Affiliate Marketing where I now make the majority of my money, and it helped me to finally leave the corporate world to do what I love full time,  However, since April of 2008 I haven’t devoted any time to taking care of my health.  As a result of that I’ve gotten fatter than ever, gaining back that 16lbs I lost plus more.

After writing out that “Perfect Day” for my coach though, it became crystal clear to me that my health is absolutely important to me and I’ve been ignoring it for way too long.  To top things off, some form of stomach flu virus hit me in the last few weeks of January and I literally couldn’t leave the house for almost two weeks because I had to stay close to the toilet.  This really drove the point home for me that if you don’t have your health, any other success in life is useless.

So, as I’ve announced already, I decided to really get serious about my health and so I launched my new Blog ( FitnessHealthAndHealing.com ) and began to really put together some plans to get myself in shape and to clean up my diet.  I started off this last week eating healthy and getting started on a new plan, but everything was still in a state of flux because I didn’t have my entire plan all figured out yet, and by Wednesday I began slipping off my plan.  By Thursday I put my plan on pause as I searched for something better, and I noticed something weird happened.

On Tuesday, my affiliate campaigns were doing fine but on Wednesday they began to slow down.  On Thursday they really took a hit and by Friday morning they were doing really crappy, even though I didn’t change anything.  So, at that point I had to make a decision.  Either:

  • (a) Spend the day figuring out why my affiliate campaigns are doing so bad, or;
  • (b) Spend the day figuring out the exact specifics of my new health plan

Whereas before I would have chosen (a), this time I decided to choose (b).  I completely ignored my campaigns, leaving them be and focused on the research I needed to do in order to get my health plan going.  I worked on that for most of the day yesterday and by 3am this morning I had a really good idea of exactly what I’m going to be doing to get my body whipped into shape.

This morning I woke up in a totally different state of being.  I’ve been totally on fire today, whipping out 4 articles for my new Fitness, Health and Healing Blog, one article for my Aquarium Blog and now this article that you’re reading.

I also spent a big part of the day working on further refining my diet and exercise plans, doing a fitness test, taking “before pictures”, taking my starting measurements and stats and about a dozen other things.  The crazy thing is that besides the eight hundred different things I did today to help me get my health and fitness program setup, today has probably been one of the most productive days for me as far as business is concerned on top of all that.

I also have ideas for another five or six articles to write too, which doesn’t ever happen when I’ve already written 6 articles in a day.  In some weird way, I think the fact that I’ve been ignoring my health has really been holding me back, because now that I’m on top of it I’m totally on fire.

Oh, and the other weird thing is that I logged into my affiliate accounts today and checked on my stats and all my numbers have rebounded back to normal without me touching anything. :)

Have you been ignoring your health and taking it for granted like me?  Could it be sabotaging your success?

I think you should outsource some of the fitness stuff. Find a good trainer. He/She will be able to wor with you to define your fitness/health goals, and then go away and make the plan for you, setup the monitoring mechanism etc. Then you have to only execute rather than define before executing. Delegating this will give you the necessary time for business. it shoudl not be a case of robbing peter to pay paul (pardon the pun).

  3. @Tim: It’s funny that you say that, because I pretty much did exactly that. Check out:

  6. Why did you stop blog income reports in July? Has your blog income decreased?

  7. What is blogging and how do you make money? I’ve looked into so many sites for making money such as Project Payday, Swag Bucks, GPT Money Online, and more. I don’t understand how they work at all. Can somebody please explain to me how this works, and how to make money blogging?

Paul, I’m kinda diggin’ you right now. I enjoyed this article and I liked your response to money grubber.

Now I’m waiting to read your response to Reiki symbols cuz I don’t really understand how to make money blogging either. I’m guessing there’s tons of information on the subject out there for sale somewhere…and that I could probably just close my eyes and click random keys on the keyboard to find it, lol. My intention, however, is to manifest this same (or better) info for ‘free’. Since this seems to be an area of expertise for you maybe you are charging for the exchange of this info…or maybe it is somewhere here on your site for free? I just got here so I’ll have to take better look around and see what I can find…either way, I’ve added you to my favorites and I’ll be back to check you out.
Abundance of all good things to you.

  9. @Money Grubber: I documented that it’s possible to make Blogging into a viable income stream, but past that I see no real value in continuing to report my Blog income month to month. This Blog is focused on helping people make money doing what they love, which may have nothing to do with Blogging. I’m here to show examples from my own life of how I earn money from my Blog, from Affiliate marketing and other things to hopefully inspire the right people to look outside the traditional Job market for solutions, but I’m not really here to report my income every single month.

I also believe that many other Bloggers are discontinuing the practice of reporting their incomes anyways. The fact that making money from a Blog is possible has been proven, so I don’t really see any other reason to continue.
