Personal Power II – Day 4

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Thursday, January 29th, 2009

I know some of you were probably wondering what happened to Day 4 of the Personal Power II program I am following.  To be totally honest I am actually quite surprised about the volume of new value I’m getting from this program.  The first time I did Personal Power II years ago, it only took me about a week to go through the whole 30 day program.  I just ripped through it like there was no tomorrow.  This time, however, things are different.

As I’m going through this program this time, it is creating some major distinctions for me that I wasn’t expecting.  Meaning, as I listen through the program it is connecting certain dots for me that weren’t connected before and each dot that I connect opens up a whole new understanding of things.

For the last two days I’ve been contemplating, thinking, journaling and meditating on all the things I’m taking in from the course and making some fairly profound shifts in my beliefs and my ways of thinking.  It’s taking a lot longer to get through each day than I thought, but I don’t want to rush it just for the sake of getting it done.  I actually want to try to derive as much value out of the course as I can so bear with me if the updates don’t come on a daily basis.  I haven’t given up, I’m just taking some extra time to get clear on things.

Day 4 focused on the concept of Neuro-Associative Conditioning, and was an extension of what was taught in Day 3.  Tony’s focus in this session was to teach his process of creating neuro-associations to things.  He stressed the importance of getting leverage on yourself first.

Leverage is a tool I’ve used over the years to achieve results in my life.  Most people are afraid to apply leverage to themselves.  One way to apply leverage to get yourself to stick to doing something you want to do, such as sticking to a diet, or workout plan or something like that is to use a Blog to document your journey.  Blogging your journey can provide tremendous positive leverage for you as you’re more likely to stick to your goals if you know that you’re accountable to someone else.

There are many ways to apply leverage on yourself, using rewards or punishments for example.  The Inspired Affiliate Marketing Challenge is a form of leverage for anyone who participates as an affiliate.  By knowing that you can win prizes if you place in the top 3 in your category, you are automatically more likely to do better because everyone likes to win.  That is an example of positive leverage… a way of dangling a carrot in front of your face.  Another way to apply leverage is to use the “stick” type of leverage where you suffer some kind of punishment if you don’t reach some form of goal you want.  The punishment could be anything, as simple as skipping going out with your friends, to something more involved like public humiliation.  Depending on what you’re trying to achieve, applying some leverage to yourself can really help you stick to your goals.

The next steps involve interrupting your existing neuro-associations to the bad habits you are trying to change and replacing them with positive ones.

One of the things I identified as a goal I want to reach as part of my theme for this year is to reward, recognize and celebrate my successes this year.  This is something that I haven’t really done a very good job of in my life up to this point.  I want to setup little “games” with myself to help me grow faster, by celebrating and rewarding myself for reaching certain milestones.  This totally and perfectly fits in with what Robbins was talking about in today’s lesson.

For example, if I wanted to set an ambitious income goal for this year, what I could do is make a deal with myself to buy a new car I’d really like to own if I hit a certain income goal.  I could then create a lot of neuro-associations that link the daily tasks that I need to focus on with owning and driving and enjoying that car.  A simple example could be creating a link between the Publish button on my Blog and the ignition start on the car I want.  Every time I click the Publish button I could associate and visualize that I am starting up my dream car.  That’s just one simple example.

There are a couple of fairly major realizations that I had in the last few days that are going to majorly impact my life and I will Blog about them soon, but I didn’t want to include these concepts in this post as they are large enough to warrant at least a whole Blog post to explain them.  I will probably continue to evolve the concepts a bit more before I share them with you guys, but I think you’ll really get a lot of value from those posts.

In the meantime, it’s time for me to get back to my goals.  All this Tony Robbins stuff has ignited a fire under my butt! :)

    Hey Paul,

This is great stuff again. I love the example of you clicking the publish button and linking the action to the though of turning on the ignition of your new car. This will be a great way to help us to stay motivated to achieve great results.

    Cheers

@Paul: You picked a great theme for this year and Tony’s program helps a lot here. It is only natural that you go slower through Personal power II second time around. It is basically the same for me, doing the program for the first time was quite revolutionary for me but I needed to take some time to digest this…instead I followed the program day by day until I finished and sticked to some principles. It has been some time now and once I agreed with myself that slower is better and I do not have to feel bad, it is priceless to go through this program again… :) My theme for this year is proper focus on important….my life purpose, goals, projects, the activity here and now. This is where I can make the biggest difference and my number one tool for focus is visualization. Tony made me realize that with right and most importantly strong leverage it is dead easy to focus properly…hell it is fun! I completely forgot about the “pain side” and about the fact that true leverage is that burning feeling that just makes you do the right thing, it doesn’t stop until you make the action in the right direction…this is something I did not understand on the deepest level when I listened to Tony for the first time and did my exercises..
I am looking forward to you future revelations and insights Paul.

We so often focus on our failures (reinforced by schooling, media and so on) and forget to celebrate our successes. It took me a long while but I finally learned to do this and I feel much better for it.

Glad you’re getting so much from the program Paul. I still have the old one from years ago, and because you started blogging about your experience with the new program – I’ve pulled mine out to go through again:)

  5. @Georjina: My only problem right now is that by the time I got to Day 5 I was already so fired up to get a bunch of stuff done, I haven’t made time to go back and finish Day 5, lol. I want to do that soon though as there are a lot of goodies there, hehehe.

This program has helped to bring back some balance for me.
