Hey Paul, I'm new to this "world" of affiliate marketing and I have been struggling with my recent campaign. It seems all my numbers are correct, but not converting into sales. Anyways, this post is great, it really simplified things for me!!!! And yes, I am one of those folks that "eyes get really big and they only say one thing….'What if I come up with 100 keywords!?'" I look forward to reading more of your posts!

@Dave: Sure, if you want to use long-tail keywords you could pick 200 keywords that get 100 impressions each. There are many ways to get a combination of keywords that produce 20,000 impressions per day.

As for MOST expensive and WORST converters, I am not so sure I agree with that. A lot of times the reason a keyword is expensive is because it's the best converter. Meaning, if someone is paying $1.00/click or $3.00/click for a keyword it's probably because they are somehow able to make more then that per click from it. Granted, they may have ways to convert those clicks into money that you may not have, but I don't think that this makes the keywords themselves bad. There are lots of keywords out there that are fairly long-tail-ish that get these kinds of impressions.

But, like I said...if you prefer to work with long tail keywords, you could always go for a giant list of 2,000 keywords that generate 10 impressions each. Totally up to you and your unique situation.

Paul,

Aren't the broad keywords that get 1,000 impressions a day the MOST expensive and WORST converters? I am not trying to be a naysayer because your numbers look good, account for some MOE, and would still work (albeit on a smaller scale) for longer tail keywords. What are your thoughts on this?

Why not try signing up for my Amped Media contest. There is an Affiliate Incubator category where you can win prizes as a brand new affiliate. Check out the contest page for details and make sure if you do sign up, you use the link on that page to be eligible.

I love the way how you made it so simple to understand. I've never really spent much time of affiliate marketing, but I might just do a bit of a test to see if I can make your numbers work :D
