Make Money. Do What You Love. Feel Great.

Do You Have the Balls to Make Money Doing What You Love?

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Friday, October 17th, 2008

Lately I’ve been working on improving my ability to recall my dreams.  As a result, I’ve had a lot of vivid dreams and have been able to remember a lot of them.  Last night I had a dream that I felt compelled to share with you guys.

In this dream, a person was explaining to me all the reasons which are preventing them from following their dream of doing what they love as a career.  As I listened to this person explain to me all the different reasons (excuses), a theme began to emerge.

The reasons excuses were varied and included things like not having enough money to pursue a business venture, to not having enough time, to not knowing what the person truly wanted to do yet.  The largest reason this person expressed, however, was the fact that they very well may have to invest a lot of energy, time and money into pursueing their path of trying to make money doing something they love and enjoy doing and there is absolutely no guarantee that they will succeed.  They could spend the next six months trying to make a go of a new business venture and it might not work out.  At least at their current job, as long as they show up and put forth some form of effort they at least get paid a salary.

In this dream I didn’t say anything at first.  I simply listened to this person go through all the reasons why they couldn’t do it.  Why they felt that they had no choice but to stick to their job, which they hated.  Their tone of voice was very aggressive as they tried to convince me that it’s simply not that easy to make money doing what you love.  “There are risks involved!“, I was told.

Up to that point in the dream, I do not remember saying a single word.  I simply listened.

What happened next was somewhat surprising to me, as I’m not usually this harsh in my language with people, but in my dream I responded by saying:

“Oh, ok, so basically what you’re saying is that you don’t have the balls to take a risk in your life and you’re waiting for a risk-free opportunity with guaranteed results to come along where you’re guaranteed to get paid for your efforts regardless of what happens.  You don’t want to put forth any effort in a direction which doesn’t guarantee you’ll make the same amount of money you make at your job in the next few weeks.  You want someone to come along and guarantee you results with no risk on your part.  Well, that’s what you already have, it’s called a JOB.  If you don’t want to take any risk then stay at your job and stop bitching about it.  If you do want to learn how to make money doing what you love, grow some balls and take a risk.”

Then, all of a sudden I woke up.

I didn’t quite know what the dream meant or why I was being so harsh in it as I don’t usually take this type of tone with people and am typically way more understanding, but I thought I’d share this on the Blog just in case it strikes a chord with someone.

Maybe it’s a wake up call.  What do you guys think?

    Paul,

I too am extremely fascinated by dreams and the role they play in our life’s. A few months ago I went through a period of time in which I would be able to recall my dreams in great detail. Every morning when I woke up, I would meditate and a rush of images would conjugate in my head. Consciously forcing myself to remember my dreams I found was a very empowering experience. I honestly believe that the process of remembering dreams is a key component in living a truly blissful life. I have been rather busy as of late so the rate of dreams in which I have been able to recall has dropped significantly; I hope that over the next few weeks I can set a aside some time to focus on my night time dreams.

Even as a mere 17 year old, I find myself light years ahead of many individuals who live a life of
“going through the motions.” Through a lot of conscious thought, I have decided that I will, at all costs (financial needs etc) choose a job in which I truly enjoy. For I believe that the money will come if my heart is invested. Coming from some one who has never had a true job, I am obviously very biased, yet I know I can find work that I truly love doing. I found the story of your dream a very worthwhile read as I believe it applies to the majority of individuals today.

    Keep dreaming,

    -Bud

    Hi Paul,

Great post! I love it. In my circle of friends we are always talking about the need for each other to grow some balls. Put up or shut up! Go big or go home! I think we all need that proverbial kick in the butt sometimes to get us going. Thanks for a great post!

    Hey paul,

Great post. Rings very true with me. It’s always interesting to hear people complain about something but not be willing to take a risk to change it. Either be happy with what you have or work to change it. But don’t live with something your not happy with. My friends always complain about not having a girlfriend or their classes or whatever, but when the chance comes to change they don’t take it. Really sad, but too bad. Anyway, keep up the good posts.

    Patrick

  4. Instead of ‘balls’, I like the way Stephen Pierce says it:

“You can’t make money and make excuses.”

  5. Glad to see this message resonated with some of you. :)

  6. Hi Paul
I have studied dreams since I was very young and can remember dreams I had when I was a child. I’ve kept a dream diary for about 25 years (some years more sparse than others). I have worked with probably around a thousand or more dreams of other people’s over the years. Dreams can give a vast amount of information from day to day life to spiritual development. They are the key to the soul and connection to higher self. In dreams we can be all things, explore all possibilities.
It’s interesting that you comment on being ‘harsh’ because what you actually say is very true. Of course sometimes people are not in the place where they can hear the truth. People talk about the ‘harsh’ realities of life when in fact reality is not harsh or otherwise, it is what it is according to how you view it.
Sounds like you’ve been having a conversation with your own inner doubting Thomas so that you can reaffirm (in no uncertain terms!) what you know to be right for you.

Just yesterday I had a conversation with someone trying to advise me on this very topic. They said it was just a matter of looking at the dollars received from one choice versus the dollars received from another choice. I thought to myself how silly that was because there are so many times we just don’t have things in black and white and we just can’t predict what kind of money we will make this month.

I woke up this morning and found I had made an unexpected $80 commission from a program that doesn’t send email notifications informing me of such commissions.

Sometimes when you do the things you love for a job it takes a while to see the results, but you know in your heart what is right for you. Life is a miracle and it is constanly changing and producing nice little surpises. Taking risks makes life fun and challenging.

  8. I bet it will be getting harder and harder to find peolpe who honestly believe that a JOB is the safer way to finance your lifes. Just sum up all the jobs that have been lost so far due to the current crisis. I haven’t really done this myself as I try to focus my energy to work on my projects but I believe thousands of families must have lost at least one full-time income. Would those peolpe be better of now if they quit their jobs a while agoe to persue a career based on what they enjoy and have passion for?

In many cases I bet they would.

It took my some years to figure out how to follow my own path. I started highly motivated a couple of times just to fall back into the same patterns again after some month.
It was this summer that I launched a new project and stayed with it ever since.
I have even managed to create more than one stream of income by now.

I make less money than I probably could taking a job again. But I’ve never been so happy with what I do.

My view on things has definitely changed. Now it feels too risky to take a job. I’d never know how long that job would be mine…

One must have balls to earn money doing what they love. Otherwise life is a burden on them.

  10. Interesting dream. If I’d had it, I would think that it was me talking to myself, and I should probably have that conversation. I just had a conversation similar to this with a friend. I told her that you can’t give up on something you really want out of fear. There are risks with anything, but if you want it, go for it. Don’t say it’s over till the last chord.

I’m lovin’ this: “You want someone to come along and guarantee you results with no risk on your part. Well, that’s what you already have, it’s called a JOB”

I look at the risk as the motivator. What can I do to increase the chances of this working out for me?

    Great post Paul!
    Cheers!
    Jay

    hi there

i come into this conversation very late (a year later!), i’ve just discovered your site so have been going through the articles. What came to mind as i read this particular one is the fact that there are are many people that still feel “stuck”". even after reading all the wonderful posts you have put, i think the majority of people are still missing that mental catalyst that helps them make the shift from a mindset that is not happy with circumstances, and is frustrated at not knowing what the next move is.

has anyone figured out what that might be yet??? maybe you have a clue or the potential to bring it to light for “stuck” individuals.
