Warhammer Online – The War Begins

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Saturday, September 13th, 2008

As if Blog World Expo wasn’t enough to keep me busy during my competition with Bonner, EA is now releasing a new video game that a lot of people including myself have been waiting for, for quite a while.  The game is called Warhammer Online, and it is in my opinion the only game that even stands a chance to potentially offer some competition to the massively popular MMORPG game – World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft is an awesome game that I’ve been playing off and on pretty much since it came out (over 2 years ago).  That is by far the longest period of time I have ever played a video game for in my life.  I normally get bored of games really quickly.  Unlike some people, I don’t play the game every day for 6 hours a day though, as I’m way too busy to do that, but I do like to use video games as a "reward system" for myself.

Meaning, I do find that sometimes I get too involved with all my projects and I end up working too hard for too many hours and I start to feel the effects of burnout if I don’t take a break.  So what I plan to do now is to basically use games like Warcraft and this new game Warhammer Online to reward myself for reaching specific goals.

For example, I might set a goal to reach a specific target with my Blog or an affiliate campaign and when I reach that target I’ll reward myself by playing a game for a few hours.  It’s a neat way to build in some "instant gratification" into your goals and milestones.

Anyways, Iast night I finally got the open beta version of the game installed and tried it out for a few hours and so far I really like it.  The game officially comes out on September 18th when I’ll be on my way to Blog World Expo in Vegas.  I guess I’ll have to wait until I get back before I totally dive into it.

In the meantime, here are some screenshots from the open beta:

I’m a bit of a part-time gamer myself – few hours a week – and I’ve been really looking forward to this release. I like your idea of rewarding yourself by playing for a few hours – that’s an awesome concept, and if it becomes a regular practice you will be getting the best of both worlds!

  2. @Elijah: Are you playing in the open beta Elijah? Maybe when the full release comes out we can play on the same server. :)

  3. Ooo I was actually debating whether to buy this game or not when it comes out. I need some sort of reward system myself so might look into that in more. I was also looking forward to diablol 3 coming out – not sure on the release date of that though.

  4. @Richard Bonner: Yeah! You definitely need to pickup this game Bonner! And play it as much as you possibly can, especially during the month of September. You deserve it… you’re way ahead of me, so take some time off, put up your feet and play some video games. :)

No but seriously, it looks like a really good game. I’ve been so disappointed with other MMO games that came out after WoW. They sucked. Matrix Online sucked. Tabular Rasa sucked. Nothing even came close to WoW, until now. Whether this game beats WoW is yet to be determined, but if anyone can I think Warhammer can.

  5. Ah nice one, I’ll definately take a look at that when it comes out – I’ll give you a shout if/when I get it so we can get on the same server etc.

I agree with you that Matrix online sucked, it was just the same thing over and over again. Do you have to pay to play Warhammer online or just the initial cost of the game?

  6. @Richard Bonner: I’m pretty sure there is a monthly subscription, much like Warcraft. It’ll probably be about $15/m.

It’s quite sad really, I remember as a kid painting the war hammer figures and battling with friends. Now instead of painting kids today will be creating on-line virtual characters. I’m getting old fast!!!

  8. @Clog Money: Dude, I still have Warhammer figurines at home. :)
