Are You Inspired?
There are really two main parts to the whole challenge of learning how to make money donig what you love. The first part is getting in touch with your true inspired self and finding purpose in your life so that you can live in an inspired state of being. The second part is learning how to remove the blocks and limitations which are preventing you from having complete financial (and other) abundance in your life while being in the state of being inspired.
Let me use Michael Jordan as an example. The first step for him was to find his true self and find basketball as a sport which he enjoyed playing and could excel at. There were other sports Jordan played like baseball, and I’m sure he tried other hobbies besides basketball. However, eventually he found inspiration in playing the sport of basketball. That was the first step.
The second step is learning how to convert that passion or inspiration to do something great with our lives into financial abundance. There are a lot of people who are successful in the eyes of the public that struggle with this. They may do something really well but have no clue how to make money from it, so they hold other jobs which they hate being at, just to pay the bills while their true passion remains a hobby. Others are capable of making money with their passions, but they have no idea how to hold onto their money, invest it, take care of it, so they end up wasting it away and end up having to go back to “work” for a living.
This article is mostly about the first step. Finding your inspired calling.
How do you know if you’re inspired?
What if you work at a job already, which you are “ok” with and it pays the bills and affords you a comfortable lifestyle? What if you’re not sure if this is as good as it gets, or if there is something else out there for you?
One of the best ways to become clear on whether or not you are living an inspired life is to learn to pay attention to your feelings. If you’re doing something because you’re inspired to do it, it will generally feel like joy. Almost like walking around Disneyland. You feel happy, you have a smile on your face, and even if you have to make an effort to do things, those things are actually fun for you to do. It doesn’t mean that you’re always smiling and laughing throughout the whole process, but it does mean that you’re feeling good inside.
For example, if you’re an inspired lawyer, you may go into a courtroom and represent a client you really care about and during your time in court you may present a really stern and aggressive posture to make your case, but in reality you are smiling inside because you really enjoy what you’re doing. The feeling of contentment is there.
On the flipside, there are many people who smile and laugh and put on a happy face on the outside and do what they need to do in order to get by, but in reality they are feeling horrible on the inside. This is a sure sign that you haven’t found your true inspiration yet.
Right now I’m learning how to do PPC Affiliate Marketing on my other Blog InspiredAffiliate.com. Even though the process of learning how to do this is quite intense in the sense that there is a LOT to learn and a lot of moving parts to put into place before you start seeing any positive results, I’m really enjoying the process.
Much like learning how the whole Blogging world works, for some reason I’m now inspired to also learn how this whole affiliate marketing game works and that inspiration is fueling my efforts. When your efforts are fueled by inspiration, everything becomes easier and things start to fall into place. Just the other day I met a guy named Richard Bonner and we started to chat it up a bit. We realized that we are pretty much in the same spot in our affiliate marketing careers. This “chance meeting” led to an idea for us to do a contest / competition together and we are now running an Inspired Affiliate vs. Richard Bonner Competition for the month of September.
When you’re inspired, things just seem to flow. People show up in your life at the exact right moment, and resources become available just when you need them.
To really answer the question “Am I Inspired?”, you need to turn inwards and pay attention to how you feel. Ask yourself what inspires you. Sometimes our logical brains can’t figure it out. We have to listen to our gut and just try things and pay attention. Do something and pay attention to how you feel.
If all of a sudden you’re at a wedding, and you’re having the time of your life and really enjoying yourself, ask yourself why. What is it that’s making this an enjoyable experience for you? Is it the atmosphere, the people, what you’re doing physically while there (dancing, sitting, eating, conversing?), or something else?
If you feel joy while playing a sport, or while on a walk in nature, pay attention to what it is that’s making you feel that way.
Turn inwards and pay attention.
That is the key to unlocking the first step and finding your true inspiration and purpose in life.

I find my inspiration comes in waves. It comes the most abundantly when I’m doing something that gets my mind “slightly” of centered. For example, I can stand in the Studio with a guitar around my neck and stand there until I’m frustrated. Or, I can stare at a “MS Word” sheet with nothing on it until I’m frustrated. But then I’ll get up and go put some dishes in the dish washer or wash the car, or just stand in the shower with the water on, and all of a sudden inspiration falls out of the sky into my front and back pockets.
There’s an old saying, free your mind and the rest will follow……

“when you’re inspired, things just seem to flow…”
Man, that’s the gravy right there…
@ Ace – I’m with you on the shower sessions… warm water seems to inspire – maybe it’s the comforting effect it has.. relaxing the muscles and what not.
Learning to free your mind on command is a jedi skill that some never seem to master…
Ditto on the shower thing. Sometimes when I’m stuck and I can’t think of any ideas, I go and have a shower, LOL. Then all of a sudden, I get ideas. I bet you if someone tracked it, the best ideas would have been thought of in the shower.
Businesses should install showers!
@paul – Hahaha can just imagine the R&D departments of the future “ok guys, we need more inspiration, quick everyone to the showers!”
Yup, everyone would also smell nicer!
Paul I think this is a great article. One thing I also try to remember to do is to pull my head out of the fantasy (goals) and ask myself if I am happy here doing what I am doing right now. I am lucky that I am. If you’re not – and i know what that’s like – then as long as you are not going to find yourself homeless in a week if you have a go – then just do it. Ask yourself “what’s the worst that can happen?” Usually it’s only that you might be forced to go back to something crap part time again for a while.
When I stop viewing tasks as a bunch of bother in the way between me and what I want, and remember how bad it could be, how bad I have had it in the past, how bad others have it now, and take stock of the fact that working from home tip-tappin’ away on the internet is pretty cool, then I am back in the present, and the power of gratitude powers up and things just get better and better.
I really can’t see a downside to that…
