PPC Affiliate Marketing Plunge – First 6 Days

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

So, I wanted to do a quick little report on the first 6 days of my PPC affiliate marketing efforts.

Firstly, I have to say that this is actually a LOT more fun than I anticipated.  As many of you who read my other Blog (InspiredMoneyMaker.com ) already know, I’m all about making money doing what you love.

I don’t like chasing money.  Meaning, I believe that if we do what we enjoy and what we love, we will attract money into our lives no matter what we do.  So when I first started thinking about Affiliate Marketing I did wonder if my intentions were right.  I asked myself if I am pursuing this because it’s something I would enjoy doing, or am I only pursuing this because I think there’s money to be made.

I’m one of those people who has a lot of interests and I always want to learn all kinds of new things, so sometimes that question can be difficult for me to answer, but after some reflection I decided to give Affiliate Marketing a whirl and see how I like it.

I told myself that if it turns out that this is not as "fun" as I thought it would be, I wouldn’t do it just for the money.  Having said that, now that I’ve actually been an "Affiliate Marketer" for about a week or so, this is way more fun than I thought it would be staring from the side lines.

This line of business requires that I put a very diverse skill set to the test and that’s kind of my specialty.  I know how to program software, but I don’t just do that full time.  I know how to design graphics, but I don’t just do that full time.  I know how to build websites, but I don’t just do that full time.  There are a few dozen other skills that I’m proficient in that are required in affiliate marketing, but you don’t really have to be a total guru in any one thing to succeed.

The more I play with this stuff, the more it feels like I was "made" for this. :)

Another reason this is feeling right for me is that so far I’ve actually lost money doing this, but I’m having fun with it.  To me, this signifies that making money is not my primary motivator here, which is a good thing.  I’m loving all the new things I have to learn and the whole challenge of it all.

Take a look at my stats.

As you can see, I’ve made a total of $98.10 in revenue.  I’ve also spent $174.81 in PPC advertising, which brings my profit/loss to ($76.71) .

Ok, I know losing 70 bucks is not something most people would get excited about, but my focus right now is on learning the ropes of the business and on growing my revenues.  Once I get my revenues flowing, it’s just a matter of tweaking my costs down to put myself in the green.  Of course this isn’t easy, and it’s not going to happen overnight but if it was easy then everyone would be doing it, right?

What’s pretty exciting is that I’m starting to finally understand and connect all the little pieces of PPC affiliate marketing in my mind.  It’s definitely a great education I’m getting for that $70 I’m investing.

Also, I’ve been "researching" affiliate marketing for quite some time now and I’ve already tried learning as much as I could before getting my feet wet, but at some point you just have to jump in and get your hands dirty.

Now that August is over, and I’ve learned what I’ve learned, I’m going to be announcing a contest later on today which I think you guys will really like.  It’s with another affiliate marketer who’s just learning the ropes like myself and we’re going to run a competition for the month of September.

More to come on that soon.
