Understanding Law of Attraction

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Friday, June 27th, 2008

I am a huge believer in the Law of Attraction.  I am also a highly analytical thinker and I have an overactive desire to understand how and why things work the way they do.  Recently I’ve been increasingly diving into depth of how and why Law of Attraction works.

I have found that there is such a broad spectrum of understanding when it comes to the Law of Attraction that the concept itself is misunderstood by most people.  Some people believe that the Law of Attraction is a Universal force that can be activated and used in our lives by following a certain set of steps or procedures.  Activate the force and get what you want.  Don’t activate it, and live your “normal” life.

Others believe that the Law of Attraction is always on, regardless whether you’re following any steps or not.  Learning how to use the Law of Attraction is simply a matter of consciusly becoming aware of the fact that you’re always attracting what you dominantly think about.

Some believe that every single thing in your life has been attracted into your life by you at a subconscious level most likely without your conscious awareness of it.  If you win a $10 lottery ticket, you attracted that 100% yourself.  If you are a victim of crime, you attracted that 100%.  Everything, good, bad, positive, negative, etc. is all a manifestation of your subconscious mind.

Then finally there are the “skeptics” who think the Law of Attraction is mostly crap people delude themselves with.  They attribute any reported success with the Law of Attraction to the Reticular Activating System (RAS) playing tricks on us.  An example of the Reticular Activating System at work is when you purchase a particular car such as buying a red Honda Civic for example, and then all of a sudden you’re seeing red Honda Civic’s driving around everywhere.  However, are there all of a sudden a whole bunch more red Honda Civic’s driving around, or are you just noticing them more because your Reticular Activating System is pointing them out to you?

The skeptics that don’t believe in Law of Attraction typically just dismiss any Law of Attraction mombo-jumbo as the Reticular Activating System being activated and people clinging onto some fantasy that they are “attracting” things into their lives.

The confusion doesn’t end there.  I’ve read books by people who say that Law of Attraction only works if you’re attracting love-based things into your life.  I’ve read books that say that it doesn’t matter what you attract, it can be positive or negative.  I’ve read books that say that only certain things which are for the greater good of everyone else will be attracted into your life, while others say the choice is completely yours to decide whether you want to attract selfishly or to help others.

I’ve been in discussions where we’ve talked about the different possibilities of HOW the Law of Attraction could work the way it seems to work.  For example, I can set an intention to attract a certain type of person into my life such as a type of boss, co-worker, partner, friend or an expert in something and within a really short period of time that exact person comes into my life.  How did that happen?  Did my intention somehow get telepathically communicated to his consciousness and a perfect set of events brought us together?

Over the last 6 or 7 years I have literally been in thousands of conversations with people about this topic.  I’ve read a few hundred books related to the Law of Attraction, and watched dozens of videos.  You could say that I have completely immersed myself in the topic for more than half a decade and this morning while driving in my car I had a really simple, yet profound thought on the subject.

The analytical mind’s need to understand how and why the Law of Attraction works is largely irrelevant.  We do not need to understand how everything works for it to work.  The distinction we must make is in understanding how and why we can apply it to work in our lives, not how and why it works.

Let me explain the difference.  Let’s say I want to learn how to drive a car.  What do I need to know?  I need to learn how to turn the car on, how to operate the gas, the brake, the steering wheel and a handful of other controls.  That’s it.  Of course I’ll need some practice, but pretty soon I can learn how to drive.  Then, all I need to know after that is where I’m going and why I’m going there.

Do I need to understand how every detail in an engine works before I can drive a car?  Do I need to know how a starter works before I can start the car?  Does understanding the ins and outs of car starters make me a more efficient car starter?  Not really.  I just turn the key and the car starts.

When it comes to the Law of Attraction, I have found that the majority of Law of Attraction teachers and guru’s agree on the concepts of how to make Law of Attraction work for you and the steps have been laid out in detail in  many books.

The good news is that this is really all we need to activate and use the Law of Attraction in our lives.  Where most people get lost is in the detailed analytical analysis of trying to figure out how the Law of Attraction could possibly work.

As a person who’s trying to transition to making money doing what you love, focus the majority of your efforts on utilizing and employing the principles of the Law of Attraction.  Attract and manifest whatever you need to become an Inspired Money maker, and don’t worry too much about how it all works for now.

Later when you’re already making money doing what you love, you can start trying to understand how the whole thing works if you wish.  For now, just learn to drive the car.

Very interesting post. I too am fascinated with the law of attraction. The video The Secret really got me into the whole concept. Just as you have said, the law of attraction can be misunderstood but in the end all that matters, is the positive benefits your well being receives from putting into into practice.

I agree with you on most parts of this article.

You really need to try new things, and the possibility that they could work are endless. If it does work then you can go back and try to improve it or figure out ”Exactly” why it worked. If it fails then you ether move on or go back and see why it didn’t work.

Thia post really got me thinking though, as with all these theories you threw upon me. It’s hard to kind of just go for one. I often find myself believing some and not believing others from a variety.

I guess you will just need to keep trying and see what works and what doesn’t.

Great post! Really enjoyed your thoughts on this one. I completely agree (being a very analytical person myself) with how you can get immersed with how and why something works, rather than just letting go of that worry and allowing the principles to work for you. :)

  4. Paul my interpretation of this is that you’re describing faith (not religion…). When you have faith you don’t need to know how it works because you know it does and thats it. I think in the case of law of attraction, if it works for you then you should keep going and don’t listen to anyone who says it is crap. The fact it works is enough proof. Whether it can be explained by a scientific theory like the Reticular Activating System then so what? Actually some other science may come along later and disprove that! If you keep listening to the skeptics and scientists, then you’ll go in and out with the tide and your faith goes down the toilet.
Personally, I don’t know whether I believe in the Law of Attraction as I haven’t tried it enough. But I don’t not believe it, which is different! But I will be giving it more of a try!

An aspect of (and possible way of explaining) the Law of Attraction is in terms of the vibratory quality and frequency of matter (eg red hondas) and non-matter (eg thoughts/intentions about red hondas). When these frequencies ‘match’, they create resonance which effectively compounds or amplifies the single instance of vibration to the point that it gets ‘noticed’ or enters into one’s consciousness or ‘manifests’. Ha! I sometimes enjoy my pseudo-scientific forays!

BTW, I enjoy reading your articles Paul especially because they are inspired by the desire for personal growth! Lucy

Good point. As a matter of fact; some things work BETTER when you don’t know or worry about HOW they work. I think I know how gravity works, but I don’t think about it. I just know to stay away from the edge of skyscraper rooftops. Ya wanna argue about airplanes doing parabollic flight patterns? Find somebody else…….. Once you start manifesting Intentions; and they manifest at most timely moments, you can never go back to not believing.

Hi nothing new, I just didn’t want my post # to be stuck on 13.

    Thanks

    Ace

  8. @Ace Andres: I always love to manifest synchronicities whenever I “forget”.

They are the quickest and most fun way to get back into the flow.

  9. Yeah, the law of attraction really works! It sad that so many people are skeptical of it though :(

Yes, the law of attraction works, just like gravity, whether we “believe’ in it or not. Our challenge is to how be more conscious of how we use or align with it. We don’t have to activate it. I’ts already “active!”
