Are Some of Your Invisible Counselors Mute?

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Last week I wrote about a visualization technique where you Assemble and Meet Your Team of Invisible Counselors.  This is a visualization technique which I have used for quite a while and which has also been written about by people like Napoleon Hill in the timeless classic “Think and Grow Rich”.

The visualization involves creating an imaginary team of people who you respect and inviting them into your little circle of counselors in your imagination.  This can be a great way to brainstorm new ideas, or to come up with creative solutions to problems.

When I’ve utilized this technique I have found that some of the comments and answers that I receive from my “counselors” are much different than ones that my mind can come up with by itself.  I believe this to be due to the subconscious filtering that our mind automatically does on our behalf.

For example, lets say that you have a problem such as a neighbor who’s dog keeps wrecking your garden.  So you brainstorm some ideas on how you can solve this problem.  Let’s say that you write down 5-10 possible solutions to the problem and then that’s it, you can’t think of anything else that might work.  Well, now imagine if you did an “Invisible Counselor” session and you invited “Al Capone” into your little circle and you asked him how he would solve the problem.  Do you think you might get a different set of answers? :)

I’m not saying that you’ll want to utilize such advice, but I’m just pointing out that our subconscious mind automatically filters out what IT thinks is NOT POSSIBLE in our current circumstances.  However, when you imagine a different character in your mind trying to solve a problem, the subconscious mind applies a different set of filters to that “character”.

What if you posed the exact same question to an Invisible Counselor like Bill Gates?  He might solve the problem by completely moving out of the neighborhood!  Maybe you didn’t think of that.

The whole point of this exercise is to open up yourself to receive other possible ideas which YOU may not be thinking of simply because your subconscious mind is filtering them all out.

So what happens when you have a meeting with your Invisible Counselors and some of them, or all of them refuse to talk or offer suggestions?  Are some of your Invisible Counselors mute?

When doing this exercise I have found that some of the Invisible Counselors in my group were not talking.  Some would offer solutions while others just sat there like lumps.  What I have found is that in the realm of imagination, some of the people might not use voice to communicate to you so you should open yourself up for them to communicate in whatever way they want.

For example, some of them might communicate in metaphors or visual aids.  You may ask your Invisible Councelors a question like “Should I buy House A or should I buy House B?” and instead of them answering in voice, they might slide over an imaginary newspaper with a headline that reads “Real Estate Market Crashes!” which might force you to consider option C which is not to purchase either house.

I have a feeling that the way your Invisible Counselors communicate with you might have something to do with either your modality of communication (auditory, visual, kinesthetic etc.) or their modality, or perhaps a combination of the two.

If you invite your grandma to be part of your Invisible Council and your question is “Am I going to be OK?”, she might not answer by talking to you, but instead she might walk over and give you an imaginary hug which tells you that everything will be ok.

I know this may sound like pretty “woo woo” stuff for some of you, but don’t discount the technique just because it sounds a bit weird.  Visualization is a very powerful tool used by everyone from top business men to world class athleates.  There have been numerous scientific studies done which confirm the importance of visualization on our path to success.  This may not be a typical visualization, such as day dreaming about sitting on a beach somewhere, but it is an effective one.

If you haven’t already, learn how to Assemble and Meet Your Team of Invisible Counselors and then don’t forget that when you pose questions to them, they might not respond to you in voice, but they might instead show you a picture, a headline, or a report, or give you an object, offer a metaphor or perhaps even perform some form of action to illustrate a solution you may not be thinking of.

As an Inspired Money Maker, you might want to ask “What Else Can I Do To Make More Money Doing What I Love?” at every session.

Comments:

  1. Hi Paul I assembled a council after your first post on this and I’ve found it to be successful. Interestingly, one of my council (BA Baracus) has been strangely silent when consulted… I think because some of the questions I’ve consulted him on can’t be answered in one-liners.

However I need to ask him about whether I should move jobs soon, so I am sure he will be sagely at that point!

  2. @Simon Stapleton: LOL. BA Baracus, that’s really funny. I never thought of including him in a meeting. I guess I would have assumed he would just say “Shut up fool!”

I guess he does provide a certain point of view with his character. Maybe it would be good to include the whole A-Team so you get all the perspectives.

Speaking of which, I heard they are going to be re-doing the A-Team as a movie next year. I heard that Ice Cube might be BA and Woody Harrelson might be Murdock.

I wonder who they’ll cast for Hannibal…. George Clooney? :)

  3. Sometimes ‘Shut Up Fool’ is all I need, perhaps when I let my ego take over!
George Clooney would be an obvious choice for Hannibal wouldn’t he?
I’d have thought they would try and get Jim Carey to play Murdoch!
Ving Rames to play BA – definitely!

  4. Nneka says:

Hi Paul, one of my guides won’t even show up. I know he exists because the others keep referring to him and when I have readings he says he exists.

How do I get him to appear and talk?

  5. @Nneka: Perhaps try doing a meditation where you meet with him alone. Maybe he’s got a personal message for your he doesn’t want the others to hear.

Or maybe he is waiting for a specific time to appear in your life. Or you are blocking seeing him for some reason. Perhaps you’re not ready to see who it really is, or to hear the message or both.

  6. Nneka says:

Hi Paul, the moment I wrote my comment, he appeared. I was calling him by the wrong name. I’m up to 4 known guides now. My guides don’t talk, really. They point and move. They are just present. I have no idea how I’m able to get what they are trying to communicate, but I do. All this stuff is incredibly mind blowing to me.

  7. @Nneka: Awesome. Maybe for you pointing and moving is all that’s needed. One of my guides doesn’t talk either. He just takes my hand and takes me places. That’s why I wrote the article, because not all the guides use voice to communicate. I wanted people to know that.
