I Get Books For Free

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

One of the perks of running a personal development Blog is that eventually people just start sending you free stuff. About a week ago I was contacted by a publisher in Texas that is publishing a new book by Kurek Ashley titled “How Would Love Respond?

The publishing associate from the company wanted to know if I would be interested in receiving a free review copy of Kurek’s new book. Even though I had absolutely no idea who Kurek Ashley was, I figured what the heck, might as well check it out. For any other book publishers out there, I don’t mind free books. :)

How Would Love Respond

Today I checked my mailbox and there was Kurek’s book in hard copy for my review. I love books so the whole idea of getting them for free is totally my kind of thing.

One of the first things I always do when I pickup a book at a bookstore or anywhere else is to just hold it in my hands and see if I get an intuitive feeling about it. It’s not really about looking at the cover, but rather about listening to my gut to see what it tells me about the book even before I read the title or look at the cover.

As soon as I held this book in my hands it had a very positive and warm energy about it so I was really happy about that. I read the title “How Would Love Respond?” and then the subtitle really gripped me.

The subtitle is “Imagine If You Were Given a Gift So Powerful That You Knew You Had to Share It With The World“. Wow. How’s that for making you want to rip open the cover and read the thing right away? Being a student of Joe Vitale’s Hypnotic Writing, it’s obvious that this title was created to speak to those who respond to action signals. I mean, doesn’t that subtitle just make you want to read the book? Maybe it’s just me and I’m weird, but it got my attention.

I had a quick skim through the table of contents, and some of the pages to see what the chapter titles and section titles were to get an idea of the kind of book this is. I then flipped open to a random chapter and began reading. Wow. The book is written in a style that’s really easy to read and it’s like the author is telling a story, so it’s really easy and fun to follow along.

I had a peek at the cover sleeve to see who Kurek Ashley is and it starts off by saying that Kurek was working as an actor and stunt man on a new movie when he was involved in a tragic on-set helicopter accident that took the lives of five of his friends, including his best friend Mike. Kurek survived but the event left him wondering why he survived and his life went into a dark, self-destructive tail spin … until he awoke with a new thought, what he calls the gift.

With this book he wants to share the gift with the world. I haven’t read the whole book yet but so far I really like it. I have over 500 books on my bookshelves so it’s pretty hard for me to find a book I actually get excited about, but this one definitely piques my interest. I will definitely have to set some time aside to sit and read this book properly from start to finish.

From what I can tell so far, Kurek seems to have a Tony Robbins meets Joe Vitale type of writing style and the content is spiritual but practical in nature. I’ll definitely have to give it a read. If this type of book piques your interest, you can pickup a copy at Amazon

Comments:

  1. I’ve received three free books so far, all from entering contests on someone’s blog. Can’t wait until I start to receive them unsolicited!

  2. Well to all those publishers out there – you’re welcome to send me books too! Thanks for the post!

  3. Hehe, I’m going to see if I can get some publishers to send me some free books I can give away in a contest on my Blog.

  4. David says:

It piques your interest. Not peaks.

  5. @David: Thanks! I never knew that’s how it was spelled. I see “peaks my interest” all over the Internet so I thought that’s how it was spelled. Fixed now, thanks.

I enjoy many of your posts–but what is the point of this? Many blog writers receive free books so this is not new information.

I’d like to suggest everyone read article A in USA Today. I opened the table of contents and notied that the article appeared on 2 pages. Then I googled the name of the author, and was astonished to discover that the author (insert commentary from publicist here). From the first 2 lines of th article I read, the author’s voice sounded similar to another writer. Everyone, click on this link, perhaps I will get a few pennies from the effort it took me to write this post! Please, more publishers, send me free books – I will endorse your book even without spending time to review the book.

Best of all, when I held the newspaper in my hand, the positive vibe that flowed from the article into my head was incredible!

  7. @Sarah: Hi Sarah, the point of some of my posts is for me to celebrate my small successes which motivates me to keep going with my Blogging career. I understand that many bloggers get free books, but I don’t. This is the second one I received so far, and I wanted to share that with people.

Perhaps someone else might be interested in knowing the level of success a Blog must have (RSS readers, traffic, income level, etc.) before publishers start doing that. I know I was. I used to read about all the free stuff that Steve Pavlina gets for review on his Blog but that was when his Blog was already super successful, and I used to wonder if publishers ever send anything to the “little guys”. Now I know, and I like to share that with others just in case they’re thinking about or are already into Blogging.

The other part of your comment implies that I am endorsing the book without reading it. I was very open and honest in the article about the fact that I have not fully read it yet, but even so I can tell you that I would have no hesitation saying it’s a good book. You may not believe in such things, but I strongly believe in my intuition and it’s ability to quickly discern good books from crap. I have read hundreds and hundreds of books on personal development and I can almost without fail pick out a good book with positive energy just by holding it in my hands for a few seconds and maybe flipping through the thing to see the chapter titles and such.

If you’ve ever heard of Marc Allen from New World Media publishing, that is exactly how he “picked” the runaway best selling book “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. Marc picked up the book and instantly ‘knew’ it was a great book without even reading it. His company published the book over ten years ago, and Marc hasn’t even finished reading the book himself yet. Not because he’s lazy, but because the book is so deep he hasn’t been able to get past a certain page. He talks about it in his audio interviews, available for free on his website.

Sorry if me sharing something I’m excited about offends you, but that’s just who I am and will continue to be. Thank you for sharing your point of view though. I’m sure there might be others who feel the same way, but didn’t say anything.

    Paul

Paul, that’s really great! You’re becoming a book critic:), way to go. Guess for the rest of us who are not receiving regular books from publishers, it means write-write-write and keep on writing.

  9. Bonnie says:

Hi Paul, I have to tell you I’m about half way through Kurek’s book and it’s really been life changing for me. Withing the first few pages I started looking at my life in a whole new way!
