How to Make Money Doing What You Love by Clearing Your Limiting Beliefs

Written by Paul Piotrowski - Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Let’s talk limiting beliefs for a moment.

What exactly are limiting beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are concepts and ideas that you believe to be true and factual that negatively affect your ability to achieve success in life.  They may or may not be visible to you.  Many limiting beliefs are buried deep within your subconscious mind where you’re not even aware of their existence.

Yet, even thought they are not consciously presenting themselves in your daily thinking patterns, they are nonetheless a destructive force in your life that you may not even be aware of.

How do we clear our limiting beliefs about making money doing what we love?

Let’s go through an exercise which will help you to identify any limiting beliefs you may have about making money doing what you love.  I learned this exercise from Marc Allen and Shakti Gawain.  It appears a few times in a method similar to the one described below in their books.  I’ve tweaked it and used it myself specifically for the concept of making money doing what you love.

You’ll get the most out of this exercise if you follow along and write out your answers on a piece of paper or journal as you go through this.

Step 1 – Get in Touch Emotionally and Physically

Take a moment to get still, relax, take a deep breath, clear your mind and focus on thinking about the whole idea of making money by doing what you love.  Allow certain thoughts and images of making money by doing what you love to enter you mind.  If you don’t know what you love to do, that’s ok, just allow whatever pops into your head to stay there.  Picture yourself a few years into the future and you’re actually making money by doing what you love.  How are you making that money?  What are you doing?  What kind of person are you?

It’s totally ok if the whole concept is still just a big blur for you.  Maybe thinking about this whole concept of making money by doing what you love just brings up a single question or statement like “But making money is hard work.  You can’t make good money doing what you love.” or something like that.  Just allow the concept to fill your mind for a few minutes.

Pay attention to the emotional aspects of thinking and feeling this whole concept of making money doing what you love.  Where do you feel it?  Where in your body do you feel the concept?  Do you get butterfly’s in your stomach just thinking about it?  Does it stress you out and cause you to tense your neck?  Does thinking about the concept of making money doing what you love lead you to tears?

Get really connected to this whole concept, and write down the things you’re feeling and experiencing physically relating to this subject.

Step 2 – Get in Touch With Your Thoughts

What thoughts enter you mind when thinking about making money doing what you love?  What statements repeatedly run through your head?  What do you worry about?  What fears pop up?  What would need to happen for you to make money doing what you love?  What would happen if you never succeeded making money doing what you love?  What would happen if you stopped working immediately and just did what you loved and tried to make money doing that?

Explore and write down your thoughts on the subject.

Step 3 – Face Your Worst Nightmare

What is your absolute worst fear about making money doing what you love?  Write down the answer to this question: “The biggest thing that I fear about making money doing what I love is ________________ “.

Once you answer that question, I want you to imagine that worst fear coming true.  Imagine that whatever it is that you fear has happened.  You are there in that very moment when the worst possible thing you feared came true.  What is the the worst that could happen if that happened?

If that happened what would be the very worst thing that could possibly happen?  If that happened, what would be the very worst thing that could possibly happen?

Get really clear on the worst case scenario.  Make sure you’re writing all of this down as you go through this exercise.

Step 4 – Imagine the Perfect Scenario

Now imagine the ideal scenario unfolding in your life starting right now that would allow you to make money by doing what you love.  Imagine that you’ve been blessed with unbelievable luck and everything just all of a sudden begins to go your way.  Imagine the absolute best case scenario unfolding right before your eyes that now allows you to make money doing what you love.

Take note of your feelings.  How do you feel now that you’re making money doing what you love?  What are people saying about you?  Who’s proud of you?  Who have you become?  How are you enjoying your life now?  Get really clear on this wonderful best case scenario.

Describe it in detail in writing.

Step 5 – Bring Forth the Fear or Limiting Beliefs That are Holding You Back.

Now I want you to ask yourself a very important question and I want you to answer it in a single sentence.  What’s really stopping me from making money by doing what I love?

Write out a one sentence answer.

For example, it may be “I believe that I am not worthy of making money doing what I love.” or

“I fear that making money doing what I love is a pipe-dream.”

“I fear that I won’t make enough money to support my family if I did what I love.”

etc.

Identify in a single sentence your fears / beliefs that are holding you back.  You may have a single fear or limiting belief that pops up, or it may be 5-10 beliefs or fears that predominantly occupy your mind on this subject.  Answer them all in one sentence answers.

Step 6 – Reverse the Energy Flow of Your Fears / Limiting Beliefs

Next, take each one of the fears / beliefs you wrote down and reverse them into the positive by creating a positive affirmation which affirms the exact opposite of what you fear.

For example, if the fear you have is “I fear that I won’t make enough money to support my family if I did what I love.” you might want to create an affirmation that says:

“I’m now ready and capable of making enough money doing what I love to support my family.”

or

“It’s possible to do what I love and make more than enough money to support my family.”

Don’t worry about whether or not the statements you’re creating are true.  Your brain might say “Well how do you know it’s possible, you’ve never done it.”   Just ignore your brain.  Just write out the affirmations in the present tense and frame them in the most positive light you can.  Make sure you don’t use any negative terms in your affirmations, such as “I won’t go broke doing what I love.”  That would not be a good affirmation because your subconscious brain doesn’t have the ability to reverse a statement that has a word like “won’t” or “don’t” or “not” etc.  So instead of saying “I won’t go broke doing what I love.” you’ll need to frame it in the positive by saying “I’ll make plenty of money doing what I love.” as an example.

Step 7 – Rewire Your Subconscious

Next, take the list of affirmations that you’ve made and read them to yourself every morning when you wake up.

In addition, you may want to identify a single affirmation out of all of those that you feel is the most important.  For example, you may want to say to yourself “I am now making $___________ / month doing what I love.” or something like that.  Take that one single affirmation and repeat it to yourself several dozen times per day for 30 days.

The affirmation I use, I’ve been saying to myself anywhere between 100-150 times per day every single day for the last week and a half or so.  So far it’s had a MAJOR effect on my life.

Don’t underestimate the power of simple affirmations repeated daily for a period of time.  Remember that limiting beliefs are like chains around your ankles.  If you unshackle yourself by following an exercise such as this one, it will be infinitely easier for you to make money by doing what you love.

Comments:

  1. The end goal is to believe in your abilities, your talents and your ideas.

One thing that you need to be conscious of is to not let outsiders squash your belief in yourself.

In other words, there are not only internal limitations that we place on ourselves, but there are external limitations that we have to watch out for.

  2. Absolutely. In fact, one could say that ALL of our internal limitations originated from somewhere “out there”. After all, we weren’t born as babies with all these limiting beliefs. We had to learn them from someone.

The difference is though that if we take responsibility for our own minds, then we can realize that even if someone “out there” has limiting beliefs about us, it doesn’t mean that we have to accept those limiting beliefs for ourselves.

For example, if we had a teacher in school that said “You’ll never amount to anything.” that’s their opinion. If we choose to accept that opinion and allow it to limit us in life, that is OUR choice. IF we take responsibility for that belief though and choose to eliminate it from our conditioning then we CAN amount to something. The challenge is to realize that by default the world WILL condition us to be “normal” which is poor, broke and unhappy as you can see all around us. The trick is to go above that conditioning and to re-condition ourselves for success.

At least that’s what I’ve found to be true in my life.

  3. Richard says:

If I may add just a step, it will be change your associations: This will prove to be a painful experience but the rewards are tremendous. I do not by any means suggest that you should change these association abruptly but it is important that you begin a process that will eliminate associations that instil the wrong belief tendencies that are not congruent with your anticipated reality.

  4. Tom Stine says:

Nice. It reminds me of a mix of The Sedona Method and Byron Katie. Good processes to use.

  5. @Tom Stine: Thanks Tom. I’ve never checked out the Byron Katie method. I’ll look into it. Sedona I’ve heard of, but for some reason it didn’t resonate with me at that time.

  6. “The difference is though that if we take responsibility for our own minds, then we can realize that even if someone “out there” has limiting beliefs about us, it doesn’t mean that we have to accept those limiting beliefs for ourselves.” – Exactly! You’re spot on, it’s not “out there” that’s holding us back, it’s “in here”, in our own subconscious. ;)
