OK Paul, here are three things I've recently accomplished with my personal development blog:

- I was featured on Problogger.net for my free ebook The Zen of Blogging. Although I wrote this ebook in February, it didn't get much attention back then because I only had 20 subscribers. Now I've gotten plenty of traffic, Diggs, stumbles, comments, and emails, and my ebook has been translated into Russian and German.

- After slow subscriber growth in the beginning (having only 39 subscribers on 3/31/08 after 4 months of blogging), I just came back from vacation to find I have 205 subscribers.

- I achieved positive cash flow (net of domain and hosting expenses) from my blog through AdSense, and made my first affiliate sale.

It will only get better from here!

I think you are very right. People (including myself) tend to always compare ourselves to some ideal that we would like to be in the far future. And if after some time we are not this person, we get frustrated.
But with a success journal as you suggest, one would be able to read the many achievements one had. And stay inspired this way.
A great tip I must say.
